Looks like our first game against Duke will be broadcast on TV for those who get the ACC Network (typically included if you have ESPN).

Really shocked that this is the 1st time we have made it to the NCAA tournament. If you think about our area there is really a plethora of high schools in NOVA, Richmond and VA Beach we could pull ladies from that are not P5 recruited that are very solid players, even maybe snag a player or two that wants to stay closer to home to play that is/was P5 caliber.

Just interesting that we haven't had such great success in past years with such rich talent pools we could draw from.

Hopefully we can keep this coach for a while and let him build a program, now he can go in to homes and report we a NCAA tourney team and hopefully turn some heads and kids will want to jump on board.

Like a lot of other non-hoops sports at Mason, softball is an afterthought.
They have a really nice facility that was supposed to be shared with a pro softball team. That team went under and its why the grandstand doesnt stretch from dugout to dugout. Stil, its nice and has lights.
Their stud pitcher is a transfer from UVA and she's from Fairfax County. To your point, there is talent in the area. The current coach was on the baseball staff for 4 years before moving over to softball 3 years ago.

The NCAA allows DI softball teams to offer 12 scholarships. These 12 can be divided up however the coach sees fit. I don't know how many scholarships Mason softball offers currently, but back in the day they were only offering 5-6.

In college baseball, the NCAA now mandates that if you offer a scholarship to a player, the amount needs to be at least a 25% scholarship. Gone are the days when Clemson and others could offer a player 1%. Its spread the wealth around and has helped Fresno St and Coastal Carolina win national titles in baseball (along with the fact the play in better-than-minor league stadiums, have great fan support, coaches, etc, etc). I don't know if the NCAA has the same 25% minimum for softball.

Impressed with how the team did despite the loss. They never looked like the moment was too big for them. I hope they take that same attitude into the next game, because they proved today that they belong in this tournament.
