Sherrod Wright: Career Scoring

The fact that Yates even wound up playing at Mason was crazy -- he was one of the greatest players in the history of DC high school basketball; if he hadn't had grade problems and other issues, he easily had the talent to play at Maryland or another ACC school.

He was an absolutely incredible shooter. I only saw him play in person a handful of times, but Carlos filled it up every night. Still the best pure shooter we've ever had, IMHO.

Dirty doesn't even cover it. He scored all his points without the benefit of a 3 point shot.

Best pure scorer I've ever seen, and like you said it was all done without the benefit of a 3-point line. In one of the rare times we beat Navy when David Robinson was there, Carlos dropped 42 points on them. Dude was simply unconscious, hitting 17 of his 27 shot attempts.

Yeah--money in the bank. One year he was the second or third top scorer in the country who was returning for the next season. He was a "scorer"--not much of a call for him to pass. I once saw him scramble for a loose ball and he wound up taking a shot while sitting on the floor! (Didn't go in).

Supposedly he was recruited by Purdue; saw cows when he got off the airplane and headed back to register at Mason.

I never saw him play but gotta believe that he would have had 200 more points had there been a 3 point line. That's 2600, which would be stupendous. 2400 points is simply amazing.

Other than Estes and Yates, I have been privileged to have seen every guy on the list play many games. Interesting common thread that each is a winner...

Carlos was a flat out scoring machine. He was often double-teamed and could draw fouls with the best of them. When he was off from the outside, he took it to the hole. He was strong enough and quick enough to get his shot off anywhere in the set offense. His mid-range game was terrific in part because they had no 3 point line (although he certainly had range). He used his body well to set up his opponents. He played with some pretty good players too (Rob Rose, Ricky Wilson, Andy Boldin, John Niehoff and Andre Gaddy) in the early 1980s. He made all conference all four years at Mason and was POTY in 1983.

Barring injury, he's going to finish at least No. 6 on our all-time scoring list.

We all thought when L signed him in the late period that he was an absolute steal, and we were right.

Defense and ball-handling issues aside, Sherrod has had a very nice career and we will miss him HUGE next season.

Its crazy to think that after all is said and done Sherrod will more than likely finish ahead of names like Folarin Cambell and Will Thomas.

He has had a solid career here and he was a great player for us.

If anyone has ever ineracted with SW at all, you would know what a cool down to earth funny guy he is. Basketball never came easy to Sherrod, he had to work his a** off to get to be the player he has become.

I'm just glad he located his game again after that awful slump in the middle of the season. It would've been sad to see such a terrific player end his college career on such a down note.

As it stands, I'll be there on Senior Night to cheer for Sherrod, BA and J2. Regardless of on-court success, all three of these young men have been nothing but good for our program. We're blessed to call them Patriots.

Who gives a sh*t? I thought it was a TEAM game where WINS made a player. He scored 1,585, but probably gave up as many if not more. Time for everyone on these boards to realize the only stat the matters is the number of wins the TEAM has.

This is a thread to celebrate the individual accomplishments of some of our guys. If you disagree with the theme of this thread why post in it? Just to be an old crumudgen?
