Possible Athletic Director scenarios

GIVING DAY 2023
For whatever reason some people are still holding out hope that next year won't be as bad as this season. But without a whisper that we're even making a change at the assistant coaching level (which with a season this bad, should be a given that someone, anyone is a scapegoat), I can't imagine it being true.

Maybe we'll hear something after the NCAA tournament, but it's not like we'd be poaching an assistant from any of the teams still playing...

I can see Hewitt refusing to cut anyone loose.

On the one hand, I'd admire his loyalty. On the other, we clearly need to shake sh!t up and bring in someone who can help Hewitt manage his weaknesses.

But it's clear at this point that he has all the leverage. He knows that the last thing Mason wants to do is fire him and eat the last 2 years of his deal, so if he doesn't want a staff change, it's not gonna happen.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we win more games next season, 10 is pretty low. The A10 is not going to be as strong next season and I bet Hewitt trys to dumb down the non conference slate just a bit. St. Louis, Umass in particular will probably take several steps back next season. I do think that Hewitt needs to win more than 20 games next year to cement his job here.....goodluck with that!

20 wins isn't going to do it. NCAA tournament appearance or bust. Lucky for us we now play in a conference where 23, 24 wins will net you an auto-bid. So if we just double our win total from this season, we're a shoe-in.

So the question becomes: will the hire be strictly "internal" (e.g. Kevin McNamee) ? Or open with internal candidates in the running?

I think MasonHoops.com Forums, LLC should be in the running. Run the athletic department by forum conglomerate.

Oh dear lordy, lol. I can see it now

Video scoreboards, D1 Football, Practice Facility, taking turns coaching Mens Basketball...

So now what? Does Cabrera hire a new AD in the next few weeks or does he wait until the summer? A new AD by the end of April could mean a new coach (somewhere I posted the GW timeline from a few years ago). Obviously, a new AD in July means Hewitt stays.

I'd be surprised if there is any new coach or assistant before next season.

It'll probably be a "Year of evaluation" with Hewitt in year 4. The new AD will want his own guy. Worst case is if the team really succeeds and makes it harder, but its unlikely.

I really hope it's an open process. Based on what Brian has told us the entire current athletic department staff is delusional about Hewitt as a head coach. Maybe they were just towing the TOC line and as AD they will have a different view, but I would be very cautious if I were Cabrera about hiring any of them.

I will be very depressed if we hire from within. There might be some people that can do the job, but Mason needs a swift kick in the a** and new energy that I don't think we would get from hiring from within.
This hire will tell me a lot about Cabrera...
