He'll receive a combined $1.6 million from GT and Mason next year (they'll continue to pay $900K for another 3 years after that).

Does he feel bad? Well boo f'n hoo.
Even if I failed on the court, I would feel like a winner being able to negotiate deals where people stroke checks like that for doing nothing . If had pride issues I would get a gig on ESPN like Uncle Fenster from Blacksburg.

That article is one of the most retarded things I have ever read. As if being an overpaid non performing head coach is the only way he could get young black men educated, mentored and on the right path.

There are thousands of black men doing that everyday on their own time and their own dime and they actually have jobs where they make a lot less and they perform a lot better.

Hewitt can do all that mentoring and educating on his own time and on his own dime, he'll have plenty of time to do that now, let's see if he does and live up to the mother Teresa image hat bullshit article paints him out to be.

I have nothing against Hewitt, just the article.

Calipari had Final Fours vacated at UMass and Memphis for being shady. Kentucky is going to pay him a base of $8 million a year plus bonuses.

Tell me again that winning doesn't matter as much as those other things.
Winning always matters, but at 8MM a year i would hope the dude would be smart enough to not get caught...

You hit the nail on the head. What I find interesting is how hypocritical those kinds of articles are. Van Gundy made his remarks about college athletes not wanting degrees, just wanting to play ball (stupid comment in my opinion). That is somehow considered racist because a lot of black kids play college basketball. This article basically says that black athletes can't hack it without special attention of people like Hewitt, and somehow this is the kind of article will be touted as gospel. Totally hypocritical.

I am African-European-American (why don't we get stupid politically correct terms like that for white) and if an article was written like that and replaced black throughout it with white, it would infuriate me. I would contact the author and tell him to stop telling the world we are not as good and need special treatment. If you tell people long enough that they are not as good (directly or indirectly through handouts or crap like this article) and they will begin to believe it. People like that author are a much bigger problem than any black hating racist. You can see those people from a mile a way and you know where you stand with them, and the overwhelming majority of people see them for the kooks they are.

People like this writer, though, are telling black people they are not as good. But since it is not blatant that is what he is doing, they are lauded for supporting black people. Since his message is essentially, subliminal, it is much worse. It gets accepted at face value, repeated and not challenged. Just disgraceful.

And if Hewitt wasn't "taking on causes" all the time, maybe he could have worked more on being a good basketball coach.

Jeez , I know I going to ruffle some feathers with this one because ive heard both sides of the racism story all my life. Black people complain about racism, White folk roll their eyes and respond back with stop living in the 1800s. Its a simplistic portrayal sure, I know ill get cut up for it.

All I can see when it comes to the subject of race, is that history has played a huge role in shaping the American ethos in terms of it. You mention this article telling people they're not good enough and people believing it, I mean, kind of sounds like the Antebellum period where slave masters were telling their slaves they're not good enough. Sure it was in the past, and you can tell people to get over things all you want but I'm sure you have to realize this reaction is coming from some perceived or actual experienced behavior whether recent or old, conscious or unconscious. I'm not giving complete credence to the article because I'm totally in agreement of "If you think you are something you will become that" but the backlash to the backlash of the article is what gives rise to the backlash in the first place. The writer knows people are going to roll their eyes at his article, he knows, that's why he writes it, in almost a defensive slightly spiteful way.

People like this writer, though, are telling black people they are not as good.

I saw the article as saying, implicitly, "People don't want us to succeed in this country based on our skin color and everything that goes along with it, so we have to look after our own." Saying others are against you is a little different than saying you just plain suck.

Its just interesting to me to watch both sides have their back and forth arguments and not realize the effect they have on each other, just like on the Hill. Can of worms opened. Go ahead guys, pick me a part.

He wouldn't have to and I know it will never happen, but I think it would be a great idea for PH to buy a page of advertising in the Broadside/4th Estate/whatever it's called now. It could simply state how he wishes the best for GMU basketball and sorry things did not work out better, which none of us would take issue with. Basically, how NBA stars who have retired or moved on have done in their hometown newspapers.

I know, will never happen, but considering he's getting $600,000 from our school next year throwing down a few hundred bucks to communicate to the student body would be the "classy" thing to do. I'm not saying he should take out an ad in the Post or anything, but talking to the student body should be done.

Has he made any public comments since being fired?

GIVING DAY 2023
"I would like to thank the Administration for having high enough student fees to pay me more money than I deserved. I would also like to thank the students for paying those fees. Lastly, I'd like to thank Tom O'Connor for being a dumbass and hiring me after another institution paid $7.2 million dollars for me to go away.

As a reminder: I am making more money next year than many coaches who are actually in that silly thing called the NCAA tournament.

Therefore: Eat shit."
