OT - Mike Lonergan Fired by GW

Years ago I attended GMU's opener at Vermont. Lonergan was the coach of the Catamounts and Larranaga led Mason came away with an overtime victory. It was a great game but I recall being annoyed by Lonergan's comments in the Burlington, VT press the next day. He didn't give much credit to GMU and instead blasted his team, saying something to the effect of "it's not like George Mason is Duke or anything." Not his exact quote but you get the idea. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

That said, I remember wishing we got Lonergan instead of Hewitt in 2011. I'm surprised they fired him this close to the beginning of the season.

Burlington's a cool little city and I definitely recommend visiting BTW.

Well we definitely aren't Duke or anything lol. And being from New England I would highly recommend visiting every state but Vermont. Montpelier, their capital reminds me of a Nokesville horse ranch

Right but they just won the NIT. Surely there's enough talent there to drag them at least a respectable season, even if they get a bystander like Hewitt. My point is they won't just instantly be a dumpster fire program.

the little PG Jorgensen who for some reason was a Mason killer last year transferred (possible whistleblower.......). Garino who played in the Olympics for Argentina (started next to Manu) also graduated as well as Their big guy Larsen graduated.. But they do have Cavanaugh (best player) and Wantanabe back which should make them good still.

You have to love this post from their board: I didn't know GW made it to the FF. We are actually on an upswing - but the poster is right - GW will be on the down trend for about 4-5 years.

Everybody knows GMU isn't Duke. Neither is Vermont. Lonergan's comment just gave me the sense that he had an arrogant streak. As I said though I would have much preferred him to Hewitt in 2011.

Given that GW's administration undoubtedly is looking to hire the polar opposite of Lonergan, the best choice for our rival Colonials is Paul Hewitt.

I guarantee he can go an entire season without so much as raising his voice, much less insulting his players and making homophobic jokes about his boss.

Clearly, other things are more important to GW than wins and losses. Hewitt is a perfect fit.
