Notre Dame to Big Ten becomes a real possibility as ACC implosion looks imminent with changing times in the conference realignment arena
Notre Dame has been in discussion with NBC in the last couple of months on the extension of their long-standing television partnership.

"According to college football insider Greg Swaim, Notre Dame could be making its way to the Big Ten in 2025 as the contract negotiations with NBC are hitting a deadlock. The Big Ten offer is much bigger than what NBC will be able to pay the school.
The Big Ten's media deal apparently includes specific provisions detailing additional annual financial compensation that FOX, ESPN, and CBS would need to pay the conference if Notre Dame joins the conference. The exact amount of this compensation remains undisclosed.
The insertion of the clause further underscores the Big Ten's keen interest in enticing the university to become a part of the conference. The Irish have been linked to the conference on multiple occasions in the past, but the school places a high value on its football independence.

So where do their other teams play? ... I mean, if they leave for basketball, there's no reason the A-10 should allow the rest of their teams to remain.
It would be membership for all their sports. Army would be added for football only.

it seems like a lateral move for basketball, but is it some sort of path away to a power 5? Is there some sort of split coming which this league might help them get to where ultimately they want to go? Maybe a merge of some sort.
id hate to lose vcu at this juncture, especially since I think one day Dayton and Slu will be gone as well. But with all the shifting I think this is a gateway to something else. Otherwise it makes little sense.

Will VCU jump to another conference? Ryan Odom's contract suggests a move could be possible.
In an age of ever-increasing conference mobility across the college athletics landscape, universities around the country are constantly evaluating realignment options.
"Article 1. Term. of Odom’s contract states:
'If vcu’s men’s basketball program enters another athletic conference that results in vcu receiving an increase of overall funds from the new athletic conference (“Increased Funding”), vcu will conduct a good faith review of the budget commitment for the men’s basketball program including the Coach’s compensation and term of employment under this Agreement and shall consider appropriate adjustments including an extension of such Term during the fiscal year in which vcu receives Increased Funding.'
Other contracts didn’t have language: In contrast, previous vcu men’s basketball coach Mike Rhoades’ contract did not include the same language, a reality consistent with the contracts of past vcu coaches.
So the language in Odom’s contract is new, suggesting vcu athletic administration could be laying the groundwork for a move to another conference, or at least preparing for the possibility."

Would take a pretty big commitment on budget and facilities from a public university to get up to the BE's level for vcu. Probably less of a jump for Dayton or SLU.
I feel like none of that would be an issue for vcu, they've shown a willingness to up their budget/commitment to basketball over the years. Don't see them missing on the long term benefits of being a BE member (increased exposure/sponsorships, media rights, etc). The question is would they be the BE's first call? Second call? Last call?
Don't see their facilities being an issue. Believe there is a new arena (not affiliated with vcu) being built about 20min from downtown, would imagine that'd quickly become an option if the BE was on the table (Siegel expansion not possible/realistic?). They've also recently announced a massive athletics village project covering most of their non-basketball sports that will include a soccer stadium, tennis facility, etc.
Piggybacking on your comment, yeah the Siegal Center is hemmed in. Not much room for expansion, if any.
And the sports complex will include a state of the art baseball stadium for Richmond's minor league baseball team that they will share with vcu. If the city's powers that be can ever get their act together.
