I just saw in the new Princeton Review that Mason now has an 87% acceptance rate. You must feel really bad if you get rejected from Mason. I remember when we were in the 60s acceptance rate.

Mason isn't UVA, but at ~150th Nationally, it's rated as good or better school than plenty of "Big Name" schools like LSU, Bama, Arkansas, K-State, Ole Miss, Ok State, UCF, Wazzu, Houston, Louisville, and Texas Tech.

Also, better than vcu and Rhody.

True. But we were 132, I believe, at one time. I know a lot of new schools were added to the National University category explains most of our drop.

Yes. Following the President Crowe criteria: set minimum entry requirements and accept everyone who applies and meets them.

I always take the rankings with a grain of salt. Mason doesn’t do well with alumni giving percentage, as an example, and that usually hamstrings their rank.

Wasn't the NOVA guaranteed admission instituted within the last 5-10 years? I'm sure that didn't help our acceptance rate.

The biggest driver in increasing the acceptance rate was Mason's initiative to grow the enrollment size. Per Mason..."Mason’s total enrollment has increased by 17 percent over the past 10 years. More than 82 percent of degree-seeking undergraduate students attend full time. Mason has absorbed approximately 48 percent of the statewide enrollment growth in Virginia public four-year institutions since 2008."

As stated above, GPA and SAT scores are higher than past classes. As long as we're passing out acceptances and not jeopardizing the quality of the students, then I'm all for bringing them.

NVCC admits don't count in the 87%. That is just freshmen.

I started college in 98--1000 on the SAT and maybe like a 2.8 GPA. I would not get into Mason these days I'm sure.

I had around a 1000 on my SAT (1020 actually) and a similar GPA. I'm fully convinced I got in because I was out of state.

My wife had SATs in the 900s but they kept calling and showing interest and she went from waitlist to being admitted. Probably also because she was out of state.

I started in 03 she started in 04, so in the same vicinity as you.

There is no way I would get into Mason anymore. I crushed my SATs, but my GPA certainly left a lot to be desired. Either high school GPAs are seriously inflated now, or kids going to Mason are just way smarter than me (easily could be the case). A 3.7 when I was in highschool and you were pretty competitive for schools like UVA/VT, and with the right extracurriculars were on the low end for W&M.

A little off course but still kind of relevant, does anyone know why Mason never pursued a medical school? We have neuro majors for undergrad, and a strong nursing program, but I've never heard any talk of looking into expanding into a full on medical school in the past.

People seriously underestimate how far calling and expressing interest can go. I ended up getting a full ride to Mason because of some tenacity and sending weekly emails expressing interests to things. I occasionally do some work with the alumni mentor program and it's always a story I tell, just because someone says no at first doesn't mean it will stay a no, and you want to be the first name on their mind if anything changes.

As a high school teacher I can tell you without a doubt that current high school GPA's are inflated. Kids can re-take assessments pretty much whenever they want. Can you imagine what your GPA would have been if you could have taken tests and quizzes multiple times? Its gotten to the point where I've been passing out a test and kids will ask me when the re-take is!!

my dad says the same thing... admin don't allow kids to fail and it puts 3x as much work on the teacher when they get to keep retaking tests until they get a passing score

There are also a ton of more AP class offerings than there used to be too. And a lot of schools have gotten rid of certain prereqs so you can load up.
