NIT Bracketology

Apparently someone does an NIT Bracketology. I cant imagine this being too credible. But its still interesting to report out on.

Currently Mason is not on the list. But Penn State made the cut. Richmond, Davidson and La Salle are all considered "Just Missed".

So by my logic, Mason should make the cut because we beat Penn State who made the cut and beat other teams that are "just missing" the cut.

Also have the opportunity for some quality wins by the end of the season. Really tough 6 games ahead of us.

I'm not sure you can pencil us in based on a single win. Keep in mind that while we don't have a ton of losses, we have some brutal ones. Mt. St. Marys and St. Louis (twice) isn't helping. The only team listed on the bubble that has a worse record than us is Davidson, but they pushed themselves in the OOC portion, while we did the exact opposite. They had five games against P5 schools, two of whom were Kansas and UNC. And they also gave UNC a game until the very end so they've raised their national profile a bit.

If we take both games this week (we won't) I'd expect to see our name at least in the conversation next week. If there's anything to take issue with it's how many sub-.500 big name programs like Georgetown or Ohio St. have been included.

Hush your face. We are winning the auto bid to the big dance.

I honestly think we have a real shot. If we could redo the SLU games we would be in 4th place.

We have a really good squad, I've said this before and I will say it again; no team scares me. I think we could beat any A10 team on any given night.

I don't think we should be in the tourney just because we beat Penn State haha. But we have an opportunity for some quality wins by the end of the season. But as GSII said, if we take care of business down the stretch; Mason has a shot at the a10 title.

I am curious, did you watch Dayton/Rhode Island last Friday night?

It's possible if seeding breaks in just the right way I guess. Those with a double bye just get such a leg up because of how fast and furious that tournament is. We've put a lot of miles on the legs of a select few and come tourney time I think that could show up playing 2-3 days in a row if we make it that far.

I'd love the NIT as much as the next person, dont' get me wrong, but heres the reality.

The NIT only has 32 spots, depending on how many regular season champions make the NCAAs, that reduces spots. In addition, add an easy 3-5 teams who will be considered "snubs" to the NCAA and be invited into the NIT, usually some of the BCS level schools.

When you roll that down you have very few spots. Mason has a chance to get a few decent wins going forward, but overall the A10 is weaker and Mason's SOS was weak. If the A10 ends up being a 1 bid league, I suspect they would take whoever loses in the final and probably one more from the A10. If its a 2 bid league, maybe one A10 team gets in.

I just don't see it happening unless Mason gets to 22-23 wins, and that means they have to run the table plus a game in the a10 tournament.

I agree with everything your saying. As it stands Mason has no chance at making the NIT. My post was more about the opportunity to make the NIT. If Mason beats URI, Dayton, vcu, Richmond then a real conversation will take place. I know that is an extremely tall order, and if that happens we better start talking about winning the A10.

But for me, just thinking about a meaningful post season makes the regular season that much more fun. And to even have the conversation just shows how far we have come.

.

Completely agree with you in what I bolded. And I much rather hearing this than what you were talking about in November when many of us "homers" were saying "Trust the process" and "wait and see" :crazytongue:

Mason could still lose a lot down the stretch considering the strength of their opponents going forward, and some of those teams could just be bad match ups. But also considering its February and Mason looks to be playing some really good basketball, I'm hoping they can do pretty well over the next 6 games, hopefully they can at least split.

This week is a huge week. I know we won't but, if we win the next three in a row the NIT becomes a very real thing. I still think we're two years out, though.

In the old days of the Cuban Coach...you WIN at home, split the road...you were in the drivers seat....

Go back and win the home games that should have been reasonably expected home wins---Towson, Mt.SM, St Bonnie, St. Louis...

We're 21-4.....

Then add reasonable home wins---left--Richmond, Duquesne....

Then flip the coin on the rest?

WOW.
