I gave up on this during the Hewitt years. If I am not out of town, I am there this year!

In the past it was more to introduce the men's & women's teams and provide "entertainment" to the undergrads, rather than a focus on a 5 on 5 scrimmage.

Typically the basketball team plays a free lance style--lots of dunks and 3's but no real defense or anything resembling set plays. Only about 15 minutes of court time. I think that was also true of how it was run during Coach L's tenure. I'm a bit curious if DP will have them take more of a disciplined approach or if it's just an opportunity to see what the new guys look like running the court in a uniform.

I believe there will be a green vs gold scrimmage also open free to fans later so this will probably be the same loose play we've seen in years past.

I hope it'll be packed, I mean it was packed for Hewitt years...

Hope you're right on this--hadn't heard anything about that, but do remember they did that last year at the RAC (or am I confusing that with the non-division 1 game?).

GIVING DAY 2023
They had a calendar of upcoming events at the meet and greet, which included an "open practice" (aka scrimmage) on Saturday, October 24 at 2pm. I don't believe that information is exactly a secret so I'm not sure why no one has posted about it.

Thanks! I was at the meet & greet but somehow missed that info. I'm presuming it's at the RAC.

Part about the open practice in the email Coach Paulsen just sent out does not indicate it is limited to Patriot Club members (though I am not sure if the email was only sent to Patriot Club members):

Additionally, we will be holding an open practice/intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, October 24 at 2:30 p.m. in the RAC, followed by an autograph session and pizza party for all who attend.
Please come and get a sneak peek at this year’s team and stick around to meet our players and staff afterwards. RSVP to lbushar@gmu.edu or 703-993-4147.

I got the email and i'm not a PC member. Just a regular season sticket holder. So it looks like it open to all.

Great turn out. Paulsen came out as George Mason.

Thanks for the link! From what I watched, it only confirmed my thought that it's really the scrimmage next week that is how I want to spend my time. Not to throw cold water on the entertainment provided at Mason Madness, but it never featured much in the way of an actual preview of what the team will look like actually playing the game.

It was a pep rally to pump up the fans for the season, it served its purpose and I think rather well.

And the average 19 year old Mason student likes the band, atmosphere, being with friends, etc. Us old guys like talk of pick and rolls, getting back on defense, boxing out, etc.
