Interesting article on ODU in the Virginian Pilot.

Super long shot. It would require a ton of teams to realign into different conferences for other sports. Can’t see that happening. Would be tough to have 16 teams in the A-10 too.

I read somewhere that La Salle is having discussions of dropping to a lower conference so there may be room without going to 16. I'd think the conference would be aiming higher if La Salle left. Not that we so superior to ODU these days.

I wouldn't say we were ever really superior to them. I miss the ODU rivalry games. They were always battles.

Odu made a football decsion when barely having a football program. They started out with a nice TV deal. Not so much now.

ODU joining the A10 would be great and I would be excited to see it happen - this article just seems to be the musings of the writer though, not actual reporting of potential goings-ons.
I'd gladly swap La Salle for ODU. A closer road trip, and no more of that high school gym. Plus more people in the building for home games against ODU.

It's a fantasy of putting ODU's basketball and football teams into the best-case scenario for both.

I agree, though, about our own self-interest: ODU, Richmond, vcu, GW every year (even if we didn't get all of them as home games) would do wonders for our average attendance and fan interest.

ODU doesn't offer anything. Even their WBB team is bad now.

Basketball-only schools should not bailout those schools that jumped on the football train. Sure it sucks for them that the train goes nowhere and is very costly. But they chose this.

Conferences are all about TV. If LaSalle was to leave (I would only see them leave if they drop down to DII or DII. They aren't going to go to the Patriot or MAAC as that would be foolish to give up the A10 $$, IMO) it doesnt hurt the league since we'd still have St Joe's in the Philly market. ODU would make sense since its adding the Norfolk DMA to the conference's TV footprint.

But as Joe said, this is just one writer hoping and not reporting on any facts.

I really would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the ODU administrative offices when they decided to make the jump to CUSA. The geography of the league is terrible for an East Coast school and they shot their basketball program in the foot making the move. A huge gamble that's clearly not paying off now that reallignment has quieted across the NCAA.

Some of the ODU faithful I talked to were convinced that the Big East would evenutally come calling [insert eyeroll emoji] but I wonder if the university drank this Kool Aid. In hindsight, the Sun Belt would probably be a better fit and would also give their basketball team a decent shot at the autobid most seasons.

That said, I would love to see ODU Bball back in our conference. Another great rivalry game to look forward to every year...

Side note: When is JMU going to decide what the heck they want to do? Two straight trips to the national championship game -- do they want to try to move up? Seems like alumni want it but the university has dragged its feet for years.

The Big East is private, catholic, and devoid of football. What the f**k would make them think they'd wind up there?

This was before the AAC was born (and before ODU had officially moved from the CAA). Not kidding -- I talked with multiple ODU geniuses who explained to me that CUSA was a stepping stone to the Big East.

Reach for the stars, land in CUSA pergatory. I think that's how the saying goes.

Have to admit, I like the school's ambition. But wow, the execution was way premature. Even back then, talks of huge conference realignments of the P5 were starting to happen or at least being discussed.

They took the approach of "let's take advantage of the chaos" and hopefully when the dust settles, we'll land where we want. They should've waited to see what their options were once the chaos was over.

Hindsight of course is 20/20

They also landed a one-in-a-million stud QB in Heinicke and were throwing their shoulders out patting themselves on the back with how "easy" it was to revive a dead football program.

Are they still on track to build that new football stadium? Last I read it would seat something like 25,000 fans and open before 2020.

You don't think JMU isn't paying attention to the mess ODU has put themselves into?

I think all the conference realignment is hurting the game. College basketball is more fun when you compete against local rivals.

I wish teams could just still still for a while and let rivals develop.
