Students have pride in schools like Tech and UVA before they even apply. Mason isn't at that level yet. It is the administration job to change perspective students thoughts on George Mason. It's not just a commuter school.
Haven't seen anything on these boards that I agree with more. Colleges right next door to people are always a bit of a turnoff. I didn't go to UNH despite them having a great poli-sci department and excellent night life because it was a ten minute drive from home. I'm sure people from NoVa have similar reservations about Mason (minus the party scene.)It's funny that you mention this because I'm pretty well convinced at this point that Mason is far more respected and attractive as an option to kids in other part of Virginia (and other states) than kids in its own back yard.
I personally know five young people from the Richmond area who got into other Virginia colleges but chose to go to Mason. One is in my church youth group and I couldn't have been more proud to see how excited he was when he got accepted into Mason. I enjoy being able to tell kids about why I love my alma mater so much; hopefully they'll consider Mason when it's their time to start applying.
There is a rapidly growing Mason alumni network in Richmond and I am seeing more Mason car stickers and clothing/gear than I have at any point in my 24 years down here. It's awesome.
I just think too many people in NOVA only remember Mason as their safety school and aren't willing to acknowledge how much the university has grown and improved even since the early 90s.
Part of changing that perception is the administration's responsibility, but it's also up to the alumni. Wear your gear with pride. Invite people to games. Talk up the school. We have a great story to tell.
Then, when we start winning again, we can build a bigger bandwagon to hold all of our new fans.
Dropping ticket prices by a couple bucks isn't going to suddenly open the flood gates.
I really don't think devaluing the product is the answer here.. Improving the product on the court and the entertainment value is.
A few times in recent years, a special has come up for families (4 pack of tickets, hot dogs and small soda). Granted, that may not get a lot of people in the door, but it is an attempt. I think the staff needs to market the 6 and 10 game plans better though. The only way I found out about a 6 game plan over 15 years ago was through advertising during game timeouts or on the old scoreboard. Now, there are video boards, why not make use of them and advertise them there? Some people can't commit to 10 games, or even 6, but 3 game plans are probably doable.
I consider myself a die hard fan, I go to several games a year
Admittedly lives 15 miles from Campus. These statements don't add up - maybe the millennial version of a die hard fan.
Can we stop with stereotyping all millennials as lazy..
I live 4 hours away, come back for 3-4 home games a year, and usually make it out to most of the games in or near Philly and NYC. Most of us "millennials" are just now starting our adult lives and the fact that we have the additional money to come out to games, purchase A10 network subscriptions, make whatever donations we can afford to the Patriot Club, etc shouldn't be completely dismissed because you don't make it to every single game for one reason or another. Just because someone only lives 15 miles away from campus doesn't mean that making that trip is easy or inexpensive.
I'm a die hard fan and after 6 straight years of season's tickets, I'm not renewing this year since I have a 1 year old. I already bought a mini plan and plan to attend addition single games that I can. The point is we don't know all of DJ3 story. Maybe it's monetary. Maybe none of his friends want to go and he doesn't want to go by himself. Maybe his job is tough some nights and restricts him to getting to games. He's entitled to do what ever he wants with his own money. I'll take a "several game fan" over a "no game fan" any day.
Patsby, congrats on the kid! I'm in a similar situation and my wife and I have gone back and forth about what type of tickets, we are getting this year since our kid is due on 12/5 and we'll likely miss the first 1/2 or 1/3 of the season.
Only clarification I would make is that DJ3's comments were that he doesn't go to more games because of traffic and b/c of what he gets for the money, said he goes to Wizards games instead. None of the reasons you hypothesize were given by him. I'm just going by what he said.
Someone like Gmujim I would consider a diehard, not someone with DJ3's confessed bonafides.
Not sure if anyone on here follows Kevin McNamee (Deputy AD) on twitter, but he typically posts some interesting articles about college athletics.

He posted some articles this morning that somewhat relate to some of the discussions that have taken place on here recently regarding athletic department spending, student fees and the cost of football.

For as dire as that article sounded, an FCS school breaking even sure isn't bad. I wouldn't necessarily point to this as a reason Mason couldn't do football considering we have 10,000 more students to pull fees from. I don't think anyone thinks footballs cheap but you would think it was bankrupting UDel the way the article is written. Not sure if anyone on here follows Kevin McNamee (Deputy AD) on twitter, but he typically posts some interesting articles about college athletics.

This is so comical to me but if you want to argue, I said "Alumni who are looking for something to do would choose a Wizards game over a Mason game." because of the traffic etc...
I still go to as many games as I can despite the poor game experience. However, I recognize most Alumni are not as loyal as a fan as me. That's why I think our administration has to do a better job of filling seats.
I was about to apologize and give a mea culpa for misquoting you, but then I double checked and you definitely said this: "But instead I'll just go to a wizards game for a better game experience for the same price"
None of my points are about what the Admin should do better, I think I'm one of the most vocal on here about what they should do better.
My only point is you can't call yourself a die hard based of what else you have said, which I have correctly quoted.
Patsby - definitely getting those noise cancelling headphones and taking the kid out as soon as possible!
Haha. I guess I forgot I said that.
