I do think it would be a good idea to hire a guy who has recruiting ties to the area. So much wealth of talent here and we are missing out on so much of it.

Wiliford would be good. No stallings though.

Lonergan would be interesting.

If it’s brad making another hire I could see him going for a Wiliford or Lonergan. Caputo probably wouldn’t come back.

Wiliford isn't sitting on the bench next to Tony Bennett for a Top 5 program to coach at G Mas. Never happen, but it's nice to dream.

Well, when given the opportunity to coach in the A10, Paulsen has improved George Mason to the point where we don't suck anymore. No NCAA/NIT tournaments.

Lonergan in his first 5 years in the A10 at GW went to an NCAA tournament, two NIT's (winning one of them), and a national top 25 ranking.

Yes, they're coaching backgrounds were similar - but Lonergan did a lot more once he arrived in the A10.

Yeah, it's not even close...

Imagine if Mason hired one of these coaches instead of DP. All hired in the same year. I intentially picked coaches at the mid major level.
Eric Konkol (La Tech Coach L Assistant)- 81-48
Michael Huger (Bowling Green former Coach L Assistant)- 65-63
Matt McCall(Chattanooga/Umass)- 71-57Steve Forbes (East Tenn St)- 96-36Will Wade (vcu/LSU)- 93-40 (Not realistic but interesting)

I mean that's nice to think about on the surface, but you can't really compare them straight up. Each league is different and they inherited programs in different states. You're also combining records for coaches who were at different schools/conferences.

I will say the Will Wade success at LSU is very interesting, but not relevant as you mentioned.

Agreed, it’s just a fun exercise. It’s like day dreaming about the lottery. It keeps you busy but gets you nowhere.

If Paulsen isn’t the guy, not sure why Lonergan would be. Their coaching backgrounds are very similar.

Lonergan strikes me as a particularly mean-spirited individual. Maybe he had a reason to be at GW, but he always looked angry. Did anyone ever see him smile?

Except ML is a better coach, who did more in the A10 (as Gunnie pointed out) and has deep recruiting ties to the area. Also think we could get him relatively cheap considering the situation and the fact that he wouldn't need to move his family.

Lonergan likely has too much baggage for Mason to ever consider it, even 2-4 years from now when we might really be considering a new coach. It would definitely be bold to bring him back and slap at GW, but that is not our style.

Also would have to wonder what being out of college coaching for that long does, plus reputational repair.

But if you read that story, you see that the dude was totally railroaded by a crackpot AD.

McCall is 0-4 against Paulsen and will not be coach of UMass for long.
