GIVING DAY 2023
My hope is that Dave is wrong about JDS like he was about Wilson, Miller and Reuter. Coaches often underestimate or overestimate players, so maybe it's possible Douglas-Stanley hasn't gotten a fair shake.

If Dave finally figured out that Miller never should have redshirted (even with Grayer and Mar healthy), that AJ was being used incorrectly or that his entire offense shouldn't go through Reuter, maybe he'll discover that one of his best shooters rode the pine the entire Maryland game until garbage time. One can dream, because this team is in desperate need of a shooting guard.
Curious to know what you mean by "Dave was wrong" about Wilson and Reuter.

Tom, this staff charts every shot in practice. Jason isn’t shooting it well and he doesn’t bring enough other stuff to the table to earn more playing time. That’s why he’s already been passed in the rotation by a true freshman with six games of college experience.

Considering how short we are in the backcourt without Kier and Boyd, there are minutes available. But it’s up to Jason to earn them.
Not doubting they track shots in practice but are you saying toms other three examples aren’t good ones either? When Dave is wrong he tends to be really really wrong. We may never know if JDS is another example.

Uh that Reuter was healthy and could play basketball or that AJ deserved to be a 10th man on a mediocre team

Is it even possible to be a 10th man when you only have 8 scholarship players on a team?

He might have been given a little bit more leash re: playing Kier/Grayer/Boyd at the 4 instead of AJ at times, but some of that had to do with circumstances (holding on to tight leads late in the second half and needing your best FT shooters on the floor -- hell, we played Boyd at the five a few times), some of that had to do with trust (AJ prone to taking too many chances on defense, playing out of control on offense), and some to do with Paulsen giving too much leash to struggling Mar and Reuter.

But, obviously, Paulsen gave him a chance to beat Mar as the starting 4 this year, so it's not like Paulsen is completely blind.

Good conversation, everyone. Just to be clear, I'm not saying Dave is wrong about JDS. I clearly said one could dream that maybe there is hope he works out whatever the issue is with his playing time, because God knows this team needs some more shooters. I get that baskets in garbage time are inflated, but he did knock down two of three 3s. It just gave me a little hope that the player we thought we were getting is still in there somewhere.

And I don't think I'm speaking out of school regarding Wilson and Reuter. It's not like a switch just flipped with AJ this year and he started playing the way he is on both ends. He and Dave just needed to find some middle ground where he got to play his style within the confines of the offense. As for Reuter, Dave anointed him all A10 before he even suited up for a game, and then proceeded to revolve our entire offense around him. One could argue it led to our slow start and also that it adversely affected the season Otis had.

I am excited to see what this team becomes when Kier returns. He'll give us another scorer, which will only make us better offensively and tougher to defend.

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. Turgeon made an adjustment early by going zone and we didnt handle it.
We played the same thing all game long and got into foul trouble and allowed drives to the hoop all night. Maybe mix it up a bit and force them to make some outside shots. Hell, even the announcers keep talking about how they can't shoot from the outside. They are like 5-21 from behind the arc.
I only half apologize for this brief interlude...

The above "definition" is a pet peeve of mine and I can't let it lie. Have you ever tried making fire with two sticks? Well, mankind's early ancestors figured it out. How? By applying pressure while spinning a small stick over and over on top of a large stick. Spin it once... nothing. Spin it three times... nope. Spin it ten times... meh. Spin it a hundred times... whoa, a hot coal! If cavemen used the above "definition of insanity" to guide them then they would never have learned to barbeque a ribeye with a baked potato on the side.

The rest of your post has merit. [I step down from my soapbox.] Please... continue.

This is one transfer I would really like to get. Great kid who would do very well in the A-10 as a combo forward. Alas, no room at the inn (for now at least).

I like him. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I doubt he's going to leave UMD to slum in the cellar of the A10.
