I agree with you on this, we don't have the horses. The Boonies players were simply better and had more skill. This isn't the NBA though, a GM can't just give DP better players. He has to go out there and get them himself. I think that is his biggest downfall and why he isn't the guy for us anymore.

Said this when Brad first hired him. Then Lil Dave proved his potential with the big commits....Dixon and Murrell...but noooooo...everyone on here said he needed time. Its been 5 f**king years! Coaches with less, can recruit better than this putz!

Oduro to me will never be more than a serviceable sub, I get it, hes a freshman and will get better, but the kid is slow, can't jump, and not going to be a 10 rebound per game guy.

A majority of your rant was spot on, but it is important to clarify that there are currently 21 players in all of college basketball averaging 10 rebounds a game. I'd be happy if Oduro could one day average 6 boards a game, but he will have to earn a lot more minutes for even that to happen.

Also Mason needs to make a commitment. Our $400k coach is producing $400k results. Next one, put it out there that we are willing to go $1.5M!

Somehow Mason lured Hewitt here. Despite his lack of success he was still an ACC big name hire. I’m sure he wasn’t cheap. Mason will dig a little deeper this time.

Throwing more money at a coach doesn’t necessarily yield results. Mason is also not paying a coach 1.5 million base without a significant private donation.
True, but mason can’t afford another slow rebuild. Generally speaking; I think a big name coach would have more success recruiting.

We were the moderately good looking girl that weighed less than 140lbs in the bar at 1AM. Hewitt was the snazzy biker guy that just happened to walk in late with no plans for the night....

He still believed he could coach. We provided recent name recognition and pretty decent team to walk into. Perfect for a name coach to go rehab at and then step back into the big leagues.

Add in a desperate AD who wanted an "F U hire" to his departed coach....we were ripe for the taking....

Hewitt and Paulsen made the same money. It’s interesting that we were willing to pay L almost a million, but then when he left went cheap and didn’t try to hire someone on the way up. You’d think in 2011 with the roster we had coming back and a 900k salary we could have had our pick of a ton of guys.

This is an interesting point because some notable media applauded the hire. Question is who will be the AD at the time of Mason's next head coach search? Tom O'Connor was pretty awful but had years of building contacts around college hoops, does BE have that to bring in a good coach? Wasn't DP their 4th choice at best?

"We can't start out that poorly against almost any other team in the A10 again. The GooMoos are TERRIBLE offensively. They hit 5 threes in the first 9 minutes, ended the game with 8 and I'm surprised they ended with that many. Even the middle-of-the-pack teams with good offenses like Davidson or UMass (yes, I'm calling it, UMass will avoid the Pillow Fight) probably won't let us catch up like that.

Schmidt postgame said something to the effect of the guys could have easily packed it in and said, hey we got one road win, nbd... I know @Bonafanatic called out Chuckie for taking Lofton over Osun for player of the game, but I got to agree. Yes, 18 rebounds is extremely impressive and we're in the bottom 7 without Osun. Lofton kept us in the game when our offense was absolutely dead in the first half. When you get into a 12+ point deficit, you need to focus on getting to within 6-8 at halftime. That's what he did. It's all psychological and being down 4 at the half is basically like restarting the game 0-0. If you're down 10+, you start pushing, jacking up dumb 3s, etc.

GMU has a really good band, but I just can't get with them having actual singers with a microphone. It just doesn't feel right. I'm ok with them almost becoming a force-fed rival (how many times have we played them twice in a season?), but while the Twitter guys like Petey are chill, I have no sympathy for a school that size in a major city only drawing 2,511 fans. Last time I checked, Bona's has about 4k fans during winter breaks, and unlike Mason, most of our students are hours from campus."

Mason has lacked (what looks to be) a big man coach since DP got here, I think it shows on the court.

Mason should look at big man trainer Duvall Smmonds out in ashburn.

He resume includes keve aluma(swofford big who transferred to tech), Qudus Wahab(Hoya), Noel Brown(2020 GW commit), Ejike Obinna(Vanderbilt)

he's may have mounir Hima out of st benedict's in New Jersey this summer. 6'11 with 7'8" wing span.

It's baffling to me to watch one of our guards attempt to drive into the paint and four other players just watch him get raped! There is no chance to offer an assist because nobody slashes in or takes interior position to get an assist. Kier, Greene, XJ, Hartwell, and Miller are great at cutting in, but are most often left all alone to take a heavily contested four to eight footer or run/pass out of the paint and re-set. Where are the 4 and 5? One eating tuna salad on rye at the eldow and the other filing his nails outside the block? Dude... get in the game!!

Look at the shot chart on the previous page. Very few shots taken within 10 feet of the rim. Clearly, Osun was the guy to beat last night. Move him to one side of the basket and then bypass him with an assist to the back door. It's the classic "Eric Maynor-to-Larry Sanders". vcu made an entire CAA championship with that one play! Guard crashes in the paint, gets the opposing center to either move or back off to defend the big man camped out at or approaching the block, and depending upon what the center gives you shoot or dish. Get these forwards to MOVE or be in POSITION as the guard drives in—it's simple team basketball. Why we don't see that is mystifying.

Its baffling that fans think we would be good in the A-10 this year with a 11-3 record. We played absolutely no one for the OOC schedule, besides a decent NM State team, we only beat horrible teams that we seemed to outshoot where 1-2 guys were hot that night.

A-10 teams have way more length and overall quality of players. We are expected to go through another "transition" year after losing Otis and brining in no one who can contribute in the front court. Fans need to accept the fact we are not a good team and once you go....all your troubles will melt away.

We have no length at every position and seems Paulsen doesn't care about recruiting big bodies in general, we have zero front court consistency, and no "star" player and go to shooter where other teams will concentrate on. They simply pay zone and let us beat ourselves. Have no one on this team that can consistently score 15-20 points a night. Greene is too inconsistent and Xavier is just not ready to assume this role as we say last night. AJ seems a one dimensional player - stop chucking up 3's!

I've seen the light.... Paulsen can't coach and can't recruit. A longtime shitty Duquesne team is finally good after getting solid recruits and the scarry thing is they are young as well as their top 4 scorers are underclassmen and have 2 seniors on their roster - one who is the 5th leasing scorer and one who never plays. They destroyed St. Louis and are sitting pretty at 3-0 in the conference. Most likely they will be good next year... along with St. Bonnie and the usual crop of teams - vcu, Dayton, etc.

How do we get in to this crop of teams where we are consistently good? Besides getting recruits who can freaking play.... how do we go about this right... Paulsen is not the answer.

Shaka will probably be available after this season if you want to go that route. Ha Mason will continue to pay coaches 400k, doesn’t matter if it’s Paulsen or the next guy.

There would be 3 former vcu coaches in the league then, which is insane -- but I guess it worked for Dayton.

If Paulsen gets fired, the first person I want to be interviewed, to be honest, is Tony Skinn. I know he hasn't had a head coaching job yet, but I think he can recruit this area and he's got the coaching chops if given the chance.

In the press conference it was stated that Hartwell was not healthy. Additionally, Oduro went from starter since November 26 vs. Nebraska to playing three minutes vs. Bonna, no explanation offered. Oduro, maybe wth the bigger body, could have kept Osun better occupied on both ends of the court. I can only hope that these are certain realities rather than lame excuses for such a colon-gurgling splatter-fest during last night's second half.

Pretty sure Lil Dave makes over 700k. Not 400k. He should make 40k.

His base is $400K. I wish he was making at least $700K. That would mean he is hititng most of his incentive bonuses. Hewitt's base was $650k/year. Neither coach has even sniffed any performace bonuses.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...bbdad0-2d66-11e5-960f-22c4ba982ed4_story.html

"Paulsen’s deal includes $400,000 in base salary and $300,000 in supplemental compensation.

The bonus package is worth up to $400,000 annually and includes incentives for the Atlantic 10 regular season title and tournament championship; NCAA tournament and NIT appearances; NCAA and NIT championships; A-10 and national coach of the year awards; and graduation rates and other academic achievement by the players."
