"FAIRFAX, Va. - Three players scored in double figures for George Mason which won its first postseason game in 18 years Wednesday night, beating Tennessee 58-55 in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in front of 4,196 fans at the Patriot Center.
The victory gave George Mason (22-9) a school record for wins in a season, and the school won its first tournament game since a 65-63 victory over Lamar in the 1986 postseason NIT. George Mason had since gone 0-3 in the NCAA tournament and 0-2 in the NIT. The Patriots also set a record for wins at home (13) and gave head coach Jim Larranaga his first postseason victory in seven tries as a head coach.
Sophomore guard Tony Skinn (Takoma Park, MD/Hagerstown CC) scored 16 points, and junior guard Terry Reynolds (Nashville, TN/Toledo) scored George Mason's last eight points to finish with 15. Sophomore forward
Jai Lewis (Aberdeen, MD/Maine Central Inst.) contributed 13 for the Patriots. The Mason bench outscored the Vols' bench, 22-10.
Brandon Crump scored 16 points to lead Tennessee, which ends its season at 15-14. C.J. Watson added 12 points. The Volunteers committed 18 turnovers, but had a chance to tie at the buzzer when Scooter McFadgon hit the rim with a 3-pointer from the left baseline.
The contest, which included seven ties, 13 lead changes and 31 total turnovers, ended at halftime tied at 29-all. George Mason never trailed in the second period and led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the frame.
Reynolds' 3-pointer with 5:36 remaining put George Mason ahead, 53-45, and his spin move in the lane with 4:22 left was the Patriots' last field goal who led 55-48. Reynolds made two free throws with 1:21 remaining as Tennessee managed to cut the deficit to two, 57-55, following Crump's jumper at the 1:06 mark.
Mason set up a play in the lane for Lewis, who had his shot blocked by the Vols' Jemere Hendrix and rebounded by McFadgon. Tennessee called a timeout with 31 seconds left to set up its play. One good block deserved another as Mason junior forward
Kevin Mickens (Baltimore, MD/Allegany College of MD) rejected and rebounded Watson's jumper in the lane, giving the Patriots the ball. Reynolds sank one of two free throws with five seconds left on the clock before McFagdon's missed three at the buzzer."
