Also helps that Wright State couldn't buy a basket in the first half... 2-26 from the field...

66-39 Mason win... hope we can see more of this Mason team in the next game

ESPN titles the write up of the game as Mason's defense swamps Wright St. Never thought I'd see that again. Great win and welcome back Holloway.

Paulsen not starting Grayer and Shevon was a great idea to get some bench production.

Actually, it was punitive. Gobo said on the broadcast that both forgot to bring their team notebooks to practice the other day as required.

Paulsen is establishing standards of conduct. Do it right or sit, no exceptions and no questions asked.
Ah I see, I think he should keep it like that though.

Completely disagree. DP can have all of the rules he wants (which is his prerogative), but all things being equal Thompson and Grayer are better than Jenkins and Murrell. That said, Murrell definitely seemed more composed tonight. The college pace seemed a little quick for him the first several games, but I agree with Jim that he will be a very good player here for the next four years.

It should be noted how much of a difference Holloway makes even when he doesn't have the ball. Teams always have to be aware of where he is, which left wide open looks for several of his teammates tonight. Some suggested Patrick would come out gunning when he returned, but I loved how patient he was in moving the ball around and taking the shots that were available rather than forcing things.

Maybe it was just the beers from the Gold Room, but I got a little teary-eyed in the second half watching a Mason team step on the throat and not let an inferior opponent back into the game. That hasn't happened since the Larranaga days, and even in the Larranaga days it only happened with the really good teams. This absolutely would have been a horribly unfulfilling 8-point win under Hewitt.

I agree that Shevon and Grayer are better players but it was nice to balance out the rotation and get production from the bench.

Some takeaways from tonight:

- Looked like the gameplan was to go small and defend the perimeter, and it worked really well. We had one big in the game most of the time and kept rotating the guards. Our guards didn't allow a ton of penetration, and our bigs did a great job rotating and helping. Jalen played the 5 on defense and was a defensive force in the paint.

- Defense was good but it was not 2-26 good. Wright State got some good looks but couldn't buy a basket in the first half.

- I'm not worried about our turnover rate. A good number of our turnovers come from the guys not being used to each other yet - a lot of passes thrown when the receiver isn't expecting them. I expect that will improve with more time together.

- Our offense functions best when Marquise is attacking the paint. When he's getting home and finishing at the rim, it really puts pressure on the defense and makes us much more dangerous.

- It was great to see Cameron, Deandre, and my son Danny getting important minutes and making plays. Cameron took a couple bad shots but otherwise was solid. I love that Danny's first instinct is to go back-to-the-basket when he gets the ball in the post. He's probably a year away but he's shown some skill.

Awesome, awesome win. Loved every minute of it.

GAME NOTES
-Mason led at the halftime break 32-10 behind a 42.9 percent shooting effort. Wright State was held to a 7.7 percent shooting effort and was just 2-for-26 from the floor.
-The Patriots jumped out to an 8-0 lead out of the gate and held the Raiders to single digits for nearly 15 minutes of action.
-With just over two minutes left in the first half, Mason gained its first 20-point lead with the halftime score.
-The last time Mason held an opponent to 10 points in the first half was against UNC Wilmington on January 8, 2007. The Seahawks shot 8.7 percent in that first half.

Best Mason game I've seen live since Larranaga was the coach. The team played hard, smart, hustled, cheered for teammates, moved the ball on offense, took charges, hit open jump shots, etc. :)

wins vs vcu and UVA were pretty epic during the Hewitt era... But I don't think we've seen a beat down like this since the Old Cuban days.

To be fair, the game against UVA was a legit win. The players and fans were 100% all-in. The vcu game was a lucky 30 footer at the buzzer, let's be honest. But I will give Hewitt the UVA win. That is fair.

But that's all in the past. What we have now is good and positive all the way around. I like our trajectory. And I like even more saying "our" when referring to the team when the last four years it was too often "them."

Totally agree about the outcome if Hewitt was here...we'd have won but it would've looked and felt slimy. Outside of us beating the hell out of ODU once, I cant think of a real home a** whopping under PH. I really can't believe how improved we are as a team in such a short time. Great to watch a team play hard for all 40 mins.

Uva had a few starters out that game. If they were playing I doubt we win.
