I was just talking to a co-worker about that this morning. I feel like every time we play vcu, the refs let them play their aggressive style of defense and let them get away with shoves, reach ins and elbow pushes where as any other game, those plays are normally called for the foul.
It's not just when we play them; it's virtually every one of their games. Somehow they became the Duke of the A10... They do what they want and it's just not gonna be called. I was at the home game against vcu this year with a buddy who is neither a vcu nor a Mason fan. He was equating it to some other teams through recent history that press all or most of the time, and who do some sort of scramble, "havoc," or other gimmicky defense that requires constant hand checks. The refs basically just decide "If we call everything, there will be no flow to the game." Unfortunately, it usually works out that the other team, who is playing a more traditional brand of basketball still DOES get called for everything. It sucks.
One example is, watch vcu's on-the-ball defender during the press. He will ALWAYS foul the ball handler about halfway between the top of the arc and the half-court line. It will NEVER be called. The refs see it, but they don't think it affects the game enough to call it. The problem is, it gets in the heads of the ball handlers and causes them to rush over the line - this screwing up their flow for the first second or two of the half court offence. Yes, a good PG should be able to handle that, but at the same time, a good ref should enforce the rules regardless of the name on the jersey
