Game 24: LaSalle University, SUNDAY, February 10th, 2 PM, Stadium/MASN

We scored 84. That's good offense, especially considering we only took 10 threes.

Kicked their butts on the glass.

G Mas could get to the basket anytime they wanted against LAS. I give them credit for being patient enough to take advantage.

I really liked our offense today sans a few really hurried turnovers. Thank god Pookie Powell started taking horrible shot choices down the stretch and we were able to rebound efficiently. Lasalle better hope they get some recruits because with Powell gone next year they will be dumpster juice. Nice seeing Kimbrough(lost recruit) play. He might be pretty damn good with some development.

Good win and Reuter only did two things that made shake my head. Couple big
Tippy toes rebounds and some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

Kier and Otis really turned it on at the end there and we needed it.

Any win after losing 2 is a good win.
-Miller continues to impress. He isnt flashy, but he is able to finish plays in a way we haven't seen in a while.
-I don't understand why we doubled the post in the first half. Their post players are not difference makers.
-Reuter and Calixte played well on offense.
-Terrible charge call that went our way in the 2nd half.
-We still make some questionable decisions with the ball.
-Nice to see us make some 3's at home
-TV Ted called the double T to start the 2nd half. He came over to the scorer's table and had no idea who he wanted to call the fouls on. He was going to call it on Miller, when the other ref came over and changed it to Greene.

Some thoughts from me:

- Echo everything that's been said about doubling the post. It's fine as a base strategy, but there are matchups where it's absolutely not necessary and this was one of them. We got burned by the same thing last year in the Fordham loss - an outside-in team got hot from 3 because we kept doubling the post for no gosh darn reason.

- I came away impressed with La Salle. They've got shooting and athletes. Haven't been able to watch them a lot so I didn't really know what to expect. They can go big, they put a few small lineups out there, they play hard, and they're well coached.

- Reuter looked great. I'm just as surprised by his turnaround as everyone else, but he's been fantastic recently. I still think Dave was on PCP or something when he called him a potential top five player, but what we're seeing isn't an accident.

- Getting ahead of myself, but next year is gonna be FUN with a pass-first point guard in Hartwell surrounded by guys who play as well off the ball as Miller, Javon, and JDS.

- Javon continues evolving. Team needed him to fill it up and that's exactly what he did. He's been tremendous going at the rim recently, which really propels him from good to great. Had a little eurostep move today that we've never seen from him before.

- Kier needs to commit to like, four mid range jumpers in the first half and then feel it out from there. He's got that light feathery touch but sometimes tries to drive against guys that are much bigger.

- Ed Croswell was the single best offensive rebounder in the country coming into this game and we held him to one. The front line did a great job against him.

Final verdict: let's not fire Paulsen just yet. I've come to like the guy.

Agree with most of what you said. I kinda appreciate that Kier doesn’t force things though. You see what happens when Otis forces it.

And I don’t think Hartwell can just be penciled in as a starter next year. I’d like to think the lineup would be something like: Kier, Greene, Miller, Mar, Reuter. If Miller can’t play the 3, then maybe Boyd competes for a starting spot too? Not to mention Xavier Johnson might have a crack at it as well.

LaSalle players must feel oftely stupid playing the whole game while trash talking, taunting our players, and committing numerous pushes/jabs and then lose the game. Glad our players were able to have composure and not let the $hit part of the game effect their play. F LaSalle.

What makes you so sure? I’m not saying he won’t, but I don’t think he’s won the job just yet. I’m looking through his stats to try and see what I’m missing. He has a nice assist-to-turnover ratio, but he only gets 1 assist about every 10 minutes. I don’t think he’s as good a creator as others have suggested. His career high is 5 points. For assists, it’s 3. He’s gotten to the line once, and missed both free throws.

Maybe there are some advanced metrics I am missing?

Playing the post tight worked the last minutes of the game when outside rotation was more aggressive and forced LaSalle into some bad shots. Maybe the game plan thinking was to deny Pookie any easy lanes.

Two other things caught my attention. St Louis is the only A10 team fielding 4 seniors? Everyone else is young including us with Otis graduating. That’s great for the league. And did I hear the announcers right — Nevada’s starting 5 are all graduate seniors? That’s really growing a team old.

Jamal is a terrific on-ball defender and an underrated shooter, but I agree it’s far from a conclusion that he steps right into Otis’ shoes.

In fact, if the staff wants Mar and Miller on the floor at the same time with Reuter, I’d say there’s almost no chance Hartwell starts — barring injury, Kier and Greene are going to be in the lineup. You can book that.

Found this on LaSalle's boards:

I was at the game today.Nice support by La Salle fans and very spirited. The arena is nice but less than half full. Wonder what it takes to have support when they are in top 4 in the A10? The band is awesome. A tick below vcu but we would kill for a band like that. They had every instrument you could think of. Must have 150 members.

I don't know if this was mentioned on the broadcast but Ted (TV Ted) Valentine was AWFUL. After the first media timeout in the first half he starts shouting and gesturing to Ashley to knock it off and keep quiet. During the under 4 time out in the first half, TV Ted did something I never saw a ref do. SIX separate times he came over to the La Salle bench and let almost all the coaches have a piece of his mind during ONE timeout. Then after another stoppage he came over to Kenny Johnson and had another conversation with our coach.

No surprise he calls a Technical at the start of the second half on both players. Of course he stood across the court and never made an attempt to tell the players to take it easy. He just fired a couple of T's. It was also terrible to hear him yapping at players like Carter and Phiri. Seriously I only remember one time where they went over to a GMU player or the bench.

The bench technical on Ashley wasn't even called by Ted it was another ref. I guess he needed to get into the act.

This crew allowed a critical double double by GMU right in front of the La Salle bench. Pookie is clocked when trying to call timeout on the loose ball. #31 for GMU had zero fouls for the game but should have been called for half a dozen illegal screens and TWICE lunging into Croswell to draw the foul. He initiated contact but no call. Ed was straight up with his body and arms. Beatty called for a block that was clearly a charge. Tough day when it's 21-11 in fouls on the score sheet.

I know one player seems to have drawn the ire of the board but this was truly a game where there were a dozen little things that need to be corrected. By everyone.

This team battled the whole game. Got off to a slow start especially defensively (Ashley was not happy and let them know it). They got it to the point with less than two minutes where they could pull it out but didn't. Need to keep working and listen to Ashley who is always teaching.

Better days are ahead.

Game is different with Hartwell running PG. Just a little smoother I guess. DP might start Mar over Miller. You never know. One thing is for sure, nobody facilitates better than Hartwell.
