Guys, bad three point shooting teams shoot bad because other teams contest their shots. Every team we play is going to have a few guys that can hit wide open ones. The defensive strategy can not be, “ oh, just let them shoot”.

They actually shot 34% from 3 which is not an insane percentage.

Hate vcu so freaking much. They got away with so much physicality tonight. Next time it’ll be different when they can’t play like that.

Took a long time for Mason to settle into how vcu was going to play, by the time they did, they had no margin for error. Felt like the typical game Mason would lose back in the CAA all the time in Richmond.

Gotta move on and take care of Richmond this week. Can’t let this linger mentally.

Oh stfu man, you are constantly whining. Even when you message me on FB. Give it up.

I've already calmed down from my pacing while watching the game so I'll say good game, ignore your comment and let you have your fun trying to get under other fan's skin. :cigar:

I'm not so worried about this loss. vcu [lack of capitalization intended] is a tough place to win. I'll bet, though, that Kier's forearms right now look like Popeye's arms (sans the anchor tattoos) after all those non-calls from the refs. Break out the long-sleeved ice shirts!

If the refs blew their whistles every time vcu fouled tonight then we'd still be playing the first half. :dead:

But, if you wanna be a top team then you can't allow the refs to beat you, as well as your opponent.

Lets talk positives

Jordan Miller 6 of 8 from the field, 14 points, 13 boards

Greg Calixte 13 points 6 of 8 from the field 3 boards

Javon Green only scored 2 points but boards

Reuter 6 of 6 from the field 15 points

Negatives

2 of 19 from 3, an iced cold 11 percent

11 of 19 from the line, 57%

Mason held vcu to 34% from 3 but obviously making 11 is going to outweigh making only 2, and 7 of them came in the second half. I thought Santos Silva other than the first few minutes was pretty quiet and Evans was quiet for the most part. Vann scoring 21 and Gilmore scoring 11 in 11 minutes were killers.

Ok onto the next one. Lets beat the spiders.

Disappointed we lost and with how we lost. It took some heroics on their part to get it, even with us not playing well or at full strength.

They challenged our guards more than any other team, that’s just good game planning. It got in our heads and messed us up early.

Kier tried too hard this game, you could tell and it showed. Seemed like earlier in the season when we were trying to play up to expectations.

Love Otis, but have come to terms with what his play is this year. Probably best and most under the radar comment of the night:“Exacerbating matters was the absence of freshman guard Jamal Hartwell II, who suffered a sprained knee in practice Friday. Hartwell has three turnovers in 171 minutes this season.”
To me Otis still doesn’t seem right (possible nagging injury?), and I don’t think the Otis of last year is coming back. Time to acknowledge that, take what we get and move on, or at least stop bitching about it.

Javon is our X factor for the offense and didn’t have it tonight. Would love to see some consistency on offense to go with his D.

Great game for our “bigs” Calixte, Reuter, Miller. However, some of that is due to vcu strategy. And having poo pooed on Reuter I will say that he was impressive tonight. Used his body well and made great shots. Also, don’t think he got stuffed! If he plays like that in practice all the time I could see the rationale for the all A10 comments.

Our bench was short and unproductive beside Calixte. Need something from Boyd and JDS, particularly when we are short handed and grinding against vcu.

If I thought EBA was an imposing environment that we dominate I’d say I’m pretty confident we get them back at home. But it’s not and there is a risk of getting swept if we don’t adjust.

Either way, we can’t lose against the “cupcakes” if we want a top 4. Hopefully we can pull together another 7-2 stretch.

Interested to see how they respond at Richmond.

Can we stop the gushing over Calixte/Reuter? vcu was smart enough realize Mason had no chance if those guys were the leading scorers. Really glad they were able to make wide-open baskets, improvement I guess

Kier was removed from being a factor in the game as was Otis. Kier's probably got a few of those forearm bruises from the pushoffs and bad screens he set. Rhoades plan was clearly to take these two guys away and make the others beat him. He's been doing that quite a bit this season. Otis still gets his because he's just that good, but he worked his butt off for his points. I like the way your bigs played. Very strong in the first half. Little match up adjustments were made and in the 2nd half they were somewhat quiet. Also, a lot of running the 30 second clock off the opponent will screw up the HC offense most every time. Very well played strong win over a decent team. Should be a good one up in Fairfax next time.

Good insight there. Our fourth year guard who has now played vcu at least 6 times prior couldn't dribble the ball up and struggled with the double teams as he got stuck in the corner because he couldn't see over the opposing team. Hartwell will have the same struggle, kier is the only guard who I felt could break the press which took away kier's usual ability to post up around the FT line. Once Kier got the ball he spent more time around the perimeter helping Otis which is why our bigs did a lot of the dirty post work.

Why we should have gone bigger at some points -- Kier, Greene, Miller, AJ, Reuter/Calixte out on the floor together, but Paulsen refuses to put AJ at the four (well, lately, anyway). I hope next year, he isn't so rigid about position when it comes to putting Miller on the wing when Mar comes back.

Our injuries might start to catch up with us in the second half of the season. We missed Grayer and Mar in this game, I think, even if Mar hasn't been playing up to last year's potential and Grayer's defense has not been what it was before his injury. Mar's length and defense would have been helpful against Vann, and Grayer's 3-point shooting is missed when Otis is struggling.

Disagree.

They had good games and we can acknowledge that. There was a blob play in which Calixte was wide open but other than that they worked for their points.

Yes, the problem isn't that Otis isn't hugely talented or that he can't get through a press. He's one of the best. Several of his scores were all him making his shot. That's always to be expected. One of our big strengths is that we go really big on the perimeter. He's not a tall guy and if trapped he's not getting out. We did a really nice job of jumping him every time he went to a corner. He had a couple of brilliant passes out for assists, but he also got caught. Our game is our big guards and wings on defense. That ball has to be hot for teams to get open looks. If you can keep it from getting hot the job is done. I see Paulson making the adjustments to beat that next time. Then it will be a battle in the paint. A pretty even battle. Can't wait to watch the next.

I expect to see you guys in the A10 final. You are better than Dayton and Davidson. Dayton doesn't match up well and Davidson will go as their stars go. Paulson is doing a nice job as usual.
