Actually losing to your rival in a rock fight on your home court when you are clearly the better team is what makes a rivalry. We’ve done it to vcu a few times over the last 6 years ourselves.
vcu was obviously desperate for a win and they played like it. I said before the game that there was enough talent on their team to challenge anyone and guess what happened? All of our guards had a catastrophically bad shooting night all at the same time and we basically lost by 2 (I know the box score says 4 but we fouled with 10 seconds left to try to extend the game and they hit both FTs).
A loss doesn't get casuals fans back. vcu was always going to be a tough game regardless if they are bad this year, zero debate. Mason played bad. Is what it is. If you want to play in the post season those are the games you have to win though. I agree that it's a good sign that program is headed in correct direction. They didn't get blown off the court.
Maybe Tony sticks around long enough to see it through, as many have said on here he's gone after 2 years though. That wasn't me, sounds like a lot of people on here are a lot more doomsday than I. I simply won't believe Mason beats vcu until it happens.
Tony was a great hire, he's doing a great job. The program was in complete shambles. He's actually made them somewhat relevant, it's going to take a long time for fans to come back in though. vcu has been winning for 2 decades now. Mason has been irrelevant for a decade so the people crying on here who want instant results. Win, win big and win now. Otherwise it's a 5-10 year rebuild.
It's a long process. It took L 10 years to get fans in. The progress he made is all but gone. Tony is basically starting over just like L was. The only advantage Tony has is it's a much bigger school now. The CAA was arguably better and was definitely a lot more fun when Mason was at its peak though.
The state of college athletics as a whole is in shambles. It's possible that the greatest modern day basketball conference is going to go under as a result of football any day now. Football has changed everything we once knew. So there's a lot of complications with all of it.
