Our defense will keep us in most games...... and our offense will prevent us from winning a few as well.

Good effort tonight, I never felt like Richmond was going to win. Don t know what Tony said at HT but that was a tremendous defensive effort to start second half ( 1 pt) nine minutes into second half...wow. One good thing about our mediocre offense is that you never know who s going to step up, tonight Woody. I do think Tony reads the boards because our FT shooting went from 50 last game to 80 % this game after my last post said to triple the FT time at practice :)

GIVING DAY 2023
Glad that Mason took care of business last night against a Richmond team that really isn't any good. League games are always going to be challenging and we always play Richmond close. I really liked that we adjusted our defense early in the second half with pressing and Richmond had a ton of issues with it.

Offensively I honestly don't know what our issue was last night specifically. We run our weaves and actions, but then it looks like we just don't know where the ball should go next. It was nice to see Maddox heat up at the end of the game being able to create for himself and scoring some big points to put the game away. We played really slow which is what a team like Richmond wants. Not saying we should track meet, but we really couldnt get out and run a bit. Maybe the pressure was to help get us easy baskets although I don't think it really did.

We're a mid team. Not great, not terrible. If for some reason we can figure out how to reduce our turnovers that would take us up a notch and our defense is going to carry us to give us a chance in every game. Its a long conference season but having moments where we chuck the ball out of bounds or lose the ball off our foot just kills opportunities to score when we are already offensively challenged.

The good news is that Mason is 2-1 and has 15 games left. Should be 3-0 but 2-1 is good. Need to focus on Umass now and take care of business once again.

not sure what’s wrong with this team. Has talent at every position. Why is Mason struggling against a bad Richmond team?

Anyone know the extent of Delonnie Hunt's injury? He came out of last night's game late, went directly to locker room limping.

I was impressed with how we guarded Hunt last night. Seemed like Tony told the guards to make someone else beat us and we did a good job shutting him down for the most part before his injury between BOC, KD, and Billups.

Woody has had a good stretch of basketball lately, going to need him to keep it going until Maddox gets out of his funk. Probably the best few games we’ve gotten out of woody, very much playing within his skill set and it translates into buckets.

Haynes is a beast but he looks for the foul call too much early, wish he’d play straight up the first few minutes while feeling out how the refs are going to call the game.

Mooney is a better coach than people give him credit for. The 3 Bid League guys mentioned that Richmond has only finished with fewer than 7 conference wins once in his 20 years there and that was almost 20 years ago. Edit: they also mentioned the last time they were legit bad (2022 or 23–not going to look it up?) was when Mooney had a health scare and wound up in the hospital.

But it’s pretty obvious we lack a point guard to make the offense go (aka more efficient).

Skinn mentioned Richmond’s offense is difficult to guard for 22-27 seconds because of all the back cuts and screens and that the pressure in the second half was designed to reduce the shot clock in the half court to make it easier on the team to guard.

At the end of the day, Mason won, and I’m impressed that Skinn explained why it was a difficult matchup—something Hewitt could never do.

I rewatched the game last night on ESPN+. Man, refs were awful both ways last night. But they were horrendous down the stetch where they really allowed Richmond to have a chance. That one foul call with 39 Sec remaining where Zach trapped Neskovic in the corner and Neskovic drove into and shoulder checked him was the absolute worst I've seen. It looked awful live, even worse on replay. Props to TS for keeping his composure and not drawing a technical during the critical time. You could see how much he wanted to curse out the refs.

Haha - I had the same impression live. Tony’s sons were sitting right behind us and I kept swiveling my head between watching Tony about to go off and his sons watching him. Good job of restraining yourself Coach/father!

More often than not..Mooney's teams are softer than a Baby's bottom..just look his record against vcu pressing teams from Shaka thru Rhoades...press'em 40 minutes..most of time..they fold at the end like a cheap suit..

I yelled at the tv and stood up for that one. I couldn’t believe that call.

His oldest kept shaking his head at the refs.

I educated his oldest son on who TV Teddy is.

Told him he probably did some of his dad's games back when he played and he looked shocked lol.

I fully would have fully supported TS and Family giving the refs a nice upper cut to the nuts.
