To oversimplify it, we seem to have our defense in good shape (thanks javon, especially), our rotations look good as well and our offense looks to be running prey smooth. Getting our three point shot established early has seemed to be what has been the final piece to our puzzle.

If we can sink some threes early in the game, allowing us to spread their D, I think we come out ahead.

I have nothing against making some 3's early, but last game until Boyd's end of half buzzer-beater, we were 0-10. Not a recommended strategy, but that game turned out okay!;)

JAG as they call him is clearly a top 5 A10 guy. thus I am confused about the comment regarding he is no Brown (volume shooter/super overrated and has less than 1 assist per game) and Stockard (eh)

He kinda shut Otis down last year, I think we’ll see Kier bring the ball up more this time around. Get Otis coming off screens all game...please.

this is a big test for Paulsen to show his adjustments. Otis looked horrible last year against Davidson in may regards last year thanks to the defense of JAG. Whoever Grady is guarding (Javon or Justin) need to bring the ball up the entire game. hopefully that is the game plan

And we were down or neck and neck with a lower A10 team up until that point. In the second half, the threes started falling and we pull ahead.

Just saying that to beat a better team like Davidson, we need the threes to start falling early in the game.

Kenpom: Mason by 2 (up from 1 after the results of the last game)
Sagarin: Davidson by .02, so essentially a pick'em game.

Other info from Kenpom:

Davidson is good on offense at:
  • effective FG% (82d) and low turnover % (90); 2 pt % (52), FT% (9), and avoiding blocks and steals
  • But they do not get a high % of offensive rebounds (314), and have a relatively low % of being fouled on their FG attempts (320)
On defense,
  • They defend the 2 well (99), don't allow a high % of offensive rebounds (48) or commit fouls on other team's FG attempts (84)
  • However, they don't defend the 3 particularly well (255) or create turnovers via steals (284)
Naturally many of our numbers for conference-only games are quite good, but the sample size is much too small to make anything of that yet.

Kenpom line has changed by a point. Mason now favored by 1.
Vegasinsider also moved. Mason opened as favored by 1, now Davidson is favored by 1.

Mason has covered ATS in the last five games and six of the last seven. They keep the momentum going for the fans and degenerates.

Mason 73
Davidson 69

We need to successfully pound the paint first either by penetration or post ups, force the defense to collapse and then kick out for open 3's.
Agreed. We need both. One without the other makes us too easy to defend.

To clarify my posts above, I was not proposing strategy. I was making a prediction. I was pointing out what I see as a barometer for how our team will perform. Now that our team has settled down and is playing consistent 40 min games, how our team does, seems to trend with hitting some of our threes.

I am not saying go jack up a bunch of ill advised threes or play our offense any different. I am saying that if we play the way we have the last two games, if we are hitting our threes early, we beat Davidson.

I may be wrong, but my impression is that Davidson's weakness may be defense around the rim to the extent that I'm not sure they have a true big. Could be a recipe for Reuter and Calixte to feast on.

Luka Brajkovovic looks like a solid big man. We shall see.

Davidson not looking so great but packing the paint and we aren’t making them pay for the slow start.
