Felt like we saw what the ceiling of this team could look like in the first half, putting up 40-plus points and getting offense from a lot of different places, but the foul trouble in the second half forced Tony to play some weird lineups that took away the rhythm.
Still very encouraged. Maddox is a bucket and he’ll be able to get his against anyone we play. RP is doing a great job of picking his spots and sharing the ball, and Hall really showed flashes of a guy who will be a mismatch problem in the A-10.
So did Newton. Nice to have 2 guys who can stretch the floor at the 4 position (when was the last time you could say that!!!).
The foul trouble for sure was partially what did us in, especially once Hall got his fourth and then Kelly and then Henry both fouled out and we had Pavrette out there.
A few missed shots too (the wide open corner three that was missed with about 3ish? minutes to go—I think that might have been Polite who missed it after hitting the first one—Would have been a game changer). A couple of critical missed FTs (Pavrette missing both his after getting fouled going for the dunk). And of course having no answer for Edwards when he went on that run and single-handidly pushed their lead to 9 so quickly.
It was a close game against a P5 team on their home court. And while it was an exhibition no one was playing like it was. A lot to get excited about for next week’s real start to the season.
I really hope they give us a real game next year. Would love a home-and-home or even a 2-for-1.
