Just watched some of Dave Paulsen's speech to CCM. He really does have a coaching philosophy that reminds me of Larranaga. Talked about breaking the game down into 4 minute segments - trying to win each one. Pretty sure L stressed the same approach.

I wonder who DP is reffering to? The 6 returnees or the 6 new guys? im betting its the 6 guys who were coached by a used car saleman the past 4 years.

Whoaaaa! Slow down there a bit. GSII, be careful how you throw that word 'coached' around. We don't want it to completely lose its meaning. And is it really necessary to impune car salesmen this way?

I hope Coach Paulsen is extremely adept at spotting diamonds in the rough. It seems like our most recent signings have more Sun Belt, Big South, CAA, and the like offers then A-10 plus offers.

When we were in the CAA, I think we did decent vs the A10 schools that would play us. We probably did better vs A10 while in CAA compared to when we joined it. Pretty sure our CAA teams could have easily beaten Fordham and Duquesne.

I'm not sure I'm getting your point. That our program was better under L then Paul Ball II?

I think you missed the fact that Boyd and Grayer are clearly not CAA level guys. I agree need to start getting more guys like those two. For now, DP seems to be picking up great players from the CAA level that fell thru the cracks, plus a few studs i.e. Boyd and Grayer.

The reality is that, just like Larranaga did in the CAA, our new staff is gonna have to find underrecruited gems until they re-establish Mason as something much better than an A-10 bottom-feeder.

Kids that have A10-or-better offers aren't going to sign up for a rebuilding process that could last for half of their eligibility or more. Even a kid like Jeff Dowtin, who should've been a slam dunk for us for several aforementioned reasons, spurned us for a top-level team in our own conference.

But among the encouraging parts of this process is that: A. We went to the Final 4 with a team full of underappreciated recruits, and B. We have a coach who has proven he knows how to get the best out of players who may not be as "talented" as others.

I'm perfectly comfortable with teams like UMass getting all the press for recruiting. Paulsen will win where it counts -- on the court.
