The fact that you can say that after watching 4 years of Paul Hewitt's offense makes you a stronger man than I.

If Hewitt had been able to win consistently with his "anarchy" offense, I wouldn't have complained that it was ugly as hell.

To me, it's like golf. They don't ask how, just how many.

Here's his Patriot tournament resume for perspective:

2008-09

Quarterfinal: No. 2 Holy Cross 75, No. 7 Bucknell 56

2009-10

Quarterfinal: No. 7 Holy Cross 67 at No. 2 Bucknell 64

2010-11

Quarterfinal at No. 1 Bucknell 78, No. 8 Army 51

Semifinal at No. 1 Bucknell 66, No. 4 Lehigh 64

Final at No. 1 Bucknell 72, No. 6 Lafayette 57 (won championship)

2011-12

Quarterfinal No. 1 Bucknell 87, No. 8 Navy 63

Semifinal No. 1 Bucknell 79, No. 5 Lafayette 52

Final No. 2 Lehigh 82, No. 1 Bucknell 77 (lost championship)

2012-13

Quarterfinal No. 1 Bucknell 58, No. 8 Navy 42

Semifinal No. 1 Bucknell 78, No. 4 Army 70

Final No. 1 Bucknell 64, No. 2 Lafayette 56 (won championship)

2013-14

Quarterfinal No. 5 Army 72, No. 4 Bucknell 71

2014-15

Quarterfinal #1 Bucknell 90, #8 Holy Cross 83 (OT)

Semifinal #4 Lafayette 80, #1 Bucknell 74

So, three quarterfinal exits with two as the higher seed.
One semifinal exit, as the higher seed.
Three final appearances all as the #1 seed, with two championships and one loss to #2 seed Lehigh.

Certainly not terribly impressive, but it's hard to read too much into bare stats like this without more context.

Well, the thing is, if he finishes in the top 4 in the A10, he will most likely be in the tournament either way. So, conference champions is nice, but the goal is to get dancing.

That 2012 Lehigh team was the one that beat Duke in the first round; also had NBA lottery pick CJ McCollum.

Three straight conference finals and two titles?

Compared to the last guy, it's like we just hired Coach K

I'll be greedy, I say the goal is to be in the Sweet Sixteen every year. Now I know realistically that won't happen, but if that's our goal and we fail and fall short and only get to the round of 32 on a regular basis I'll take it. But I know a lot has to happen before that happens.

Anyone else get the feeling DP is one of, if not one of the most clever coaches in A10? I have no reasoning or evidence to support this claim. Reminds me of when Mr. Miyagi rolled up and challenged the Cobras with an unskilled pupil.

So I actually disagree with you here. I think it's pretty impressive. First, I sort of throw out the first couple years as "team building" seasons. I expect NOTHING from GMU this season, and realistically only hope to see improvement next season. It takes time to get your guys/system/style/etc in place.

In the next five years, he was the number 1 seed 3 times. I actually value that MORE than I value tournament success. Tournament success can be somewhat luck based. Regular season success is the result of sustained excellence.

If you are consistently excellent, you will likely have more success long term than if you get hot for a year or two in the tourney. Over time, water finds its level, and tournament success will tend to revert to the mean.

Give me a guy who is in the top two in the conference every year over a guys who is up and down but gets hot in the tourney.

I'm with you in putting sustained success over tournament success. It's a much more meaningful indicator of performance. But outside of the finals appearances, his teams were bested by inferior teams more often than not. Not alarming to me, but I wouldn't mind hearing from a Bucknell fan who has witnessed these seasons first hand to provide insight. I still firmly believe DP is a hell of a coach.
