GIVING DAY 2023
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but Muscala, hit the game winner for Atlanta in game 2 over my wizards. DP, Bucknell and Mason have been mentioned several times in this series when they speak about Muscala.

Gotta be good for those with NBA aspirations, right? RIGHT?

Even better to have a coach capable of actually developing somebody into an NBA player, instead of one who gets undeserved credit for sending so many guys to the league.

Nice meet and greet with the Coach at the Patriot Center tonight. DP introduced the staff and 2 of the players (Shevon and Julian). Marko was also there and all 3 autographed the kinds of mini-basketballs that were shot to the crowd after a home win (remember those?).

Coach talked about the inevitability of people transferring after a coaching change, how last thursday and friday weren't good days when he took calls from 2 players (not named by the coach but must have been Jackson and Lockett) who indicated that they wouldn't be returning, and how yesterday was a good day when 2 recruits committed to Mason within 5 minutes of one another.

He talked about the 4 recruits briefly and said that they fill a need for ball handlers and shooters but also warned that it's a big step from hs senior to college freshman. So no promises with respect to record, but will put a team on the floor that will be dedicated to getting better.

The other things he said sounded familiar:
  • recruits for character, coachability, good students, attention to detail
  • non-negotiatiables: attitude, effort
  • philosophy is to coach first to prevent losses (more games are lost than won)
    • reduce turnovers, defend/prevent 3's, defensive rebounding and cited data on how successful they were at Bucknell in doing that
  • prefers half court defense
  • balance offensively: get the other team to double team in the paint and have shooters outside to keep them honest.
Others may have different memories of what was said/emphasized.

The meeting should really have its own thread, but what stood out to me was his passion, but more importantly is his no nonsense approach. How he said how he expects hard work and striving to excellence. Also, how he said we, as fans, will be proud of the effort and discipline we will see from players on the court...and if they don't have effort they won't be on the court!

I'm sold.

One very smart person asked a question was about facilities and the Eagle Bank money - DP took the opportunity to drive it home that recruiting is a competition and that we needed better locker rooms and a basketball only practice facility.

Plans were drawn up for a practice facility and academic building for athletes attached to the patriot center...find those bitches, dust them off and build it! Locker rooms could also really use some updating.

For better or worse, we're in an arms race with other schools.

You either keep up or get left for dead....We've dicked around long enough. Time for Brad and company to keep the momentum and get it done.
