Yeah, it also dispels the myth some spread around here that we were loaded with talent. To me, this is where Hewitt failed us the most. He thought he could just throw a bunch of athletes out there with no game plan at all. The result: We had by far the worst backcourt in the entire league, and it wasn't even close.

There is no doubt in my mind Paulsen can get more out of Hewitt's players than Hewitt did, but it also comforts me that he knows he needs to hit the road and get us another PG to back up Moore and a few more shooting guards who can actually shoot.

Is it a question of talent or how they were implemented into an offensive scheme. It would seem that we might get more out of what we have with skills development and a scheme that fits a round peg into a round hole.

It's a combination of both. Jalen is a perfect example. He has the talent to excel in the A10, but he doesn't have the talent to play the position Hewitt forced him to play. Hewitt wanted Jenkins to be like Ryan Pearson, but that never worked because Jalen doesn't have the perimeter game to draw defenders out. Ryan made defenders pay if they played off him, and he had the ability to drive if they came out to cover him.

As a result of Hewitt's arrogance/stubborness/ineptitude, Jenkins was forced to try to create shots in a bullshit scheme. He got away with it more his freshman year when other teams had to account for Sherrod, Allen and Holloway, but he became more of our opponents' focus when Hewitt crapped the bed on recruiting guards other teams feared.

It was nice to hear that Paulsen wants them to be "George Mason" guys.

Not Paulsen or Hewitt guys. Hopefully whatever scheme he teaches the team, will be for whatever strengths this group has.

My take from the interview was we lack skilled shooters and guard play. He didn't seem to have a big issue with our front court, I think he sees players he can work with. There are young long athletic players on our roster that he can teach defense to. We lack guards, we all know it. Too many turnovers, terrible shooting, poor defense. Some can obviously be taught but listening to the interview I think he knows it needs to be addressed by getting some players currently not on the roster.

The more I listen to him the more I buy in. Its gonna be a long road but we are finally in good hands.

So if PG is the key missing peg here - do you think Coach P will go for a transfer/JUCO for an immediate need or adjust our recruiting more mid/long term.

Bingo. It is easy to make 5 foot shots (well, kinda) when you have good shooting guards like Allen and Sherrod for the other team to worry about.

We saw what happened this year when we have 0 shooting guards. The other team will concentrate on Jenkins and lock him down, this visibly caused Jalen a lot of worries and frustration this year.

Will be interesting to see how Paulsen pulls Jenkins mind and physical strength(s) together the next couple years.

It stills boggles my mind how Hewitt under recruited at the guard position. Everyone know to win these days you must have a good back court and some depth. We have mediocre talent in the back court and zero depth, lets hope Lockett and Mayimba can help in that respect a little atleast. Hewitt Seemed to think he could take guys who played primarily in the post in HS ( Lockett in particular) and make them perimeter guys in short order, just doesn't make sense to me. Hell if Hofstra hand't lost their coach we wouldn't have MM either....holy shit balls. Everyone knew we had/have back court issues but it does make me feel better to hear Coach DP verbalize it. Hewitt would never be as candid or open as DP has been since his arrival....love it.

When Hewitt was fired at Georgia Tech, he was pretty candid and talked about mismanaging the roster played a large part in their struggles. It's so odd that he would do the same thing here.

It looks like we have three open spots for next year - bring in the guards! I wouldn't mind one of those being a 5th year transfer.

One name that I just saw - Alex Mitola from Dartmouth. A couple quotes that jumped out:

“Alex always wanted to see if he could play up at a little bit of a higher level,” Gill St. Bernard’s coach Mergin Sina told Jerry Carino. “Out of high school he didn’t have a chance to do it.”

"The Ivy League will miss Mitola’s potent long-range shooting, superior ballhandling and clutch play."

FYI - Bucknell played Dartmouth in 2012. Mitola scored 12 and went 4 for 10 from 3 in that game.

I've been saying for awhile that what we need is a shooting guard who can get to the rim and who has a nice perimeter game. If CJ Jackson isn't coming, we are also in desperate need of a point guard too.

I still think a starting lineup of Moore, (shooting guard), Jackson, Jenkins, Thompson could be formidable right away.

Holloway will be a nice 6th man, especially if Paulsen can get him some wide open shots.

The rest of the roster is a bit of a mystery to me.

Fitting. The GotG graphic shows TOC showing Hewitt the playbook on how to sh1t on George Mason Basketball. Hewitt is depicted as readying himself for the task.

I have no idea where Mitola plans to play next year. I have seen him play. He is a very good shooter, although he has a bit of a funky release. He's not overly athletic. He was a smart, fundamentally sound player in the Ivy League.

Paulsen does have a connection to Dartmouth and to Mitola:

Dartmouth Connection: Dartmouth's Athletic Director is Harry Sheehy. Sheehy came to Dartmouth from Williams College, where he was the bball HC for 20 years and the AD for 7 or 8 years. Sheehy was DP's coach at Williams. DP also served as Sheehy's assistant after DP graduated rom Williams.

Mitola Connection: One of DP's players at Bucknell was Dom Hoffman. Hoffman was a teammate of Mitola at Gill St. Bernard's.

I know it didn't have anything to do with Paulsen, but I didn't want to start a new thread for such a minor item. The only other thread I could think of was "Where Are They Now?"

I edited my signature for precision's sake. The quote remains a reminder of part of what I love about America.

Man, just listening to this interview for the first time.
1) The interviewers accent is wild.
2) He seems like he couldn't be further from Hewitt in style/emphasis.
3) Next year may be UGLY

Assuming the team only loses Gray and Edwards, I don't see it being uglier than either of the last two seasons. I predict 12-15 wins. The losses will be free of 15-20 TO's, unfathomable inbound plays and nation leading foul numbers. Not expecting miracles, but a thing of beauty compared to the last couple of years.
