“He’s a great communicator,” Hewitt said. “That’s a weakness of Marquise Moore, who doesn’t talk much. When Corey was out there (Saturday), you might have noticed I was more quiet than in most games because Corey was taking control of things and communicating what we want done. I like it that way. I prefer not to have to say much.”

The 5-11 Edwards, who started 44 games in his first three seasons, delivered a prototypical game Saturday. He took only two shots, missing both, but had seven assists, five rebounds and three steals to go with 3-for-4 foul shooting in 37 minutes. He made sure the ball got to Shevon Thompson, Jalen Jenkins, Isaiah Jackson and Patrick Holloway, each with 13 points.

“My role is to distribute the ball, make sure everybody gets the ball before I take my shot” said Edwards, who played at high school power Christ the King HS in Queens, N.Y. “I’m making sure the wings and big men are doing what they’re supposed to do, making sure everybody’s on point. I’ve been doing this naturally since high school. I worry about everybody else before I worry about myself.”

He does take pride in his defense, which usually means hounding the opposing point guard. But down the stretch Saturday, Edwards made a key play when he intercepted a post entry pass, leaping high to take the ball away from LaSalle’s 6-8 Jerrell Wright.

Everything he says irks me. It's like he's doing it on purpose.

I actually like the quote. If a coach has properly prepared his team, he shouldn't have to constantly coach and correct them in game, but focus on adjustments and calling plays. The senior leaders should also have been groomed and trained enough to take on much of this role in the game as well.

Right, so he can just sit back, adjust the tie, call a few timeouts, stand up, cross arms, sit down, look at Houston, rub head, check phone to see if Okajoke sent a text from the end of the bench, call more timeouts,... all are more important than the game in front of him.

Quentin, at the risk of being accused of being the same person as you, I will state that I agree with you, to a certain extent. A team that has been prepared in practice should be able to function, for the most, part without the coach having to tell them where to be at every moment of the game.

But, I also agree with Bricker that everything he says getting on my nerves. It is the way he says things that is so annoying. Instead of saying that Corey did great and he ran the team the way we prepared in practice, he has to insult Marquis Moore (he could address that in private) and says he prefers not to say much. It just sounds off a little bit. It doesn't help that I want to see him gone so much that I can taste it.

Surely, it wasn't a secret that Marquise is not a vocal leader? IMO, this is a weakness that Marquise needs to address if he wants to be an outstanding PG. So, I have no problem with Hewitt raising the issue publicly.

Some of the best coaches in every team sport are effective at manipulating their players by sending messages to them through the media.

Since we don't have any real reporters covering our team, we'll have to hope Marquise visits gomason.com and gets the point Hewitt was trying to make.

I hate it when the best coaches do it. Imagine how I feel when Hewitt does it.

I couldn't disagree more. I agree it is a weakness, and I agree it is no secret (Hewitt should have known that when he recruited him, right?). It is poor coaching to do it through the media. I agree with Walter on hating it from the best coaches. I also agree with fanatic, it sounds like blaming to me.

One other comment. I would cut Hewitt more slack and have more hope he might improve if he took responsibility more often instead of always making it sound like he is blaming the players.

He could have come out and said something along the lines of: Corey really demonstrated what we are trying to have happen in every game. My job on game day should be more strategic and less tactical. It is my responsibility to make sure the team gets that in practice so that it comes out on game day.

That stays positive, MM should get the point, he sounds more like a true coach and less like he is trying to blame others.

sounds like to me that Hewitt is trying to light under a fire under Moore's a**, Moore has not looked to good so far this season and Mason is going to need good PG play to compete. Luckily, Thompson and Jackson have picked things up.

For me, it's not what was said as much as how it was said. Fair or not, this is one of the reasons (other than wins/losses) that PH isn't very endearing to fans.

A quote like that is just another reason why I dislike Hewitt. He can be classless at times.

You take away from Corey by talking about the deficiency of a teammate. Calling out the deficiency of Marquise in a discussion about Corey is unnecessary.

Want to light a fire in Moore...do it in practice. In a meeting, whatever.

What Hewitt could have said was something "Corey is a fantastic vocal leader and I hope some of our underclassmen can learn from him."

From my experience as a manager ...a real leader will take his people to task internally, take responsibility personally, but be united and positive externally, ie the media.

It does always seem Hewitt like to subtly put blame on anyone else but himself.

So Marquise "hasn't looked good" and yet he's managed to average 10 pts, 4 rebs and 3 assts through our first 13 games?

Imagine what his stats would look like if he had played well.
