there has been more of “we are fundraising for x, here’s the plan”, for a while now. There’s the baseball fence project and the be a patriot campaign as examples.

Agreed and to my point Brad has gotten that done. I think he needs to hire someone to do community and alumni engagement. We should easily outshine other area universities for sports - for example - GWU, Georgetown, American, etc. We need to engage the Fairfax community, then the broader NOVA community. More promotion in public spaces, tv, radio, etc.

I think Brad should hire whoever does marketing and relations from vcu and get that person in here. He should be giving handjobs to Dr. W. to increase fees and get a new baseball stadium, lacrosse/soccer stadium and get corporate sponsors from the area - go straight for the breweries and wineries in the area.

We need a serious pimp hand to compliment Brad's business style.

maybe not handjobs and hiring a pimphand, but community engagement needs to be worked on. Supposedly it’s improved in talking to Zack Bolno but I’m not in the area to really see.

Hewitt has a pretty impressive career. Say what you want about him at Mason, I won’t fight it. Outside of Mason, he’s worked in the NBA and now the G League, coached for team USA basketball as an assistant and head coach. Been to the finals with GAtech and was in the tourney in 2010. His coaching strategy worked at times, guy landed one of the best stretch forwards of all time. But F it, keep hating him, doesn’t matter anymore. Talent > everything.

And yet finished 6th in a CAA where the highest rated team was Delaware at 141...with Allen, Sherrod, Arledge, Vertrail, and Johhny Williams on that team (also the good Holloway and Marko as freshmen).

You want to go back and watch that team blow a 6 point lead to New Mexico with less than a minute to go? Or give up like a 6 point play to South Florida? Or lose to Towson for the first time ever? Or getting swept by Delaware? Or blow a massive lead to Northeastern in the CAA semifinals?

You think they just weren't "talented" enough? Not enough talent on that team?

I mean, sure, it might have been interesting to see what a team could have done with Ahmad Gilbert and CJ Jackson as freshmen in the A-10, but do you honestly believe they would have saved his job after he went 9-22 the previous season?

I agree that talent is of the highest importance.

HOWEVER

Impressive career? That 7.2 million dollar buyout was impressive. That 5th place finish with Team USA is equally impressive. 10-15 G League record. 72-104 conference record at Ga Tech. 32-38 conference record at Mason.

Guy brought in talent, that’s not debatable, but his career is far from impressive.

If you know me - you know I embellish my posts with verbal flourishes - but we are talking about the same thing.

Also I agree that assistants are critical. I think that Kelly and Fischer leaving after year 4 hurt Dave a LOT. Hiring Bryson/Pete/Mojo was patching a wound that was really deep. To lose your right hand guys for over 10 years at once probably did him in.

We can agree to disagree cause I don’t want to lead this thread down the Hewitt rabbit hole. I’m impressed by his career as a whole, was coach of the year in 2 separate conferences and competed in the ACC. Went to the tourney 6 times and finished his career over 500. Yes, he bombed at Mason, dealt with a new AD, shitty facilities, changing conferences, retaining a former coaches team. Oh well, I’ll stop. Give me Kim English and let’s hit recruiting trails STAT.

The one thing I’ll give Hewitt is that he showed you can recruit kids to Mason with out a lot of shiny objects.

That’s in part what makes the last 4 years of Paulsens tenure so frustrating. He got the shiny objects while being, IMO, a better coach. But he and his assistants couldn’t pull in the right talent to get to the next level.

I would love to know what Hewitt strategy was and what was said to guys he was recruiting and compare it to paulsen.

We’ve seen that just talent doesn’t pan out and we’ve seen the plateau of the decent coaching and getting good kids approach. We need a coach who can do both and have assistants that can compensate for a weakness.

Without the right mix we won’t get there.

Paul Hewitt signed Chris Bosh to Georgia Tech. He was a wizard recruiter.

The new coach should be physically attractive but not so attractive that he distracts the Mason women from paying attention to me and Mike Chandler when he hangs out at B Dubs

Would you prefer one who dresses mostly in suits for games or shiny sneakers and polo shirts?

I’m a fan of the polo shirt look. If we are dead set on a semi-attractive coach, I’d like for them to wear pants that may be just a tad bit too tight, causing the female crowd to blush, and the male crowd to be envious.

You described a great networking guy who found some luck here and there. Eye for talent, sure, but you make him out to be way more than he really is
