Realistically, with the current state of our athletic department, how fast can we get something done with Tony?

You schedule a dinner meeting with Tony at Capital Grille, or insert some fancy steak house here, for Friday or Saturday night and then schedule meetings at Mason for next week and layout all cards on the table for him to decide.

That's how I would roll

Actually it does need to be Tony, for this specific reason:

Beyond basketball and recruiting acumen, which Tony has, he “gets” Mason and understands what he’ll be up against in trying to rebuild a winning program with resources that are limited compared to many of our peers. That is no small thing — it should be obvious by now that just any coach cannot be successful here.

We’re 0 for 3 trying to hire outside the Larranaga coaching tree. Time to bring it back inside the family.

110% agree. Time for Tony to come back and give him the keys. Can't get any worse at this point as we are officially at rock bottom.

Tony has the connections and the ability to re-energize the fanbase at this crucial juncture.

Truth. Need someone who knows us and can build without bolting too soon.

Not to be overly contrarian, but I really don't like hiring the coach before the AD.
If I'm a coach, I want to know that I have the unmitigated support of my boss coming into a job, and if he didn't hire me, I'm always going to worry that the guy they hire will be like "...I mean, he's alright...not who I would have hired, but I guess it'll work".

That's not being set up for success. Like, personal relationships matter A LOT in making a successful work environment.

I'm a big believer in process and fundamentals, and I hope Mason follows good process, at the expense of expediency.

The athletic director position has been vacant for what, six months? If there is a process chart for hiring a critical position I doubt step one is contemplate navel. Begs the question what are these folks doing…who is responsible? I can’t imagine it’s the president.

Same. But I think the administration sees the value in getting someone that's not only a strong coach and recruiter with ties to the area... but has ties to the university and its history.

Kim English is departing George Mason to become the head men’s basketball coach at Providence College.

“We are moving quickly and looking nationwide to identify our next men’s head basketball coach, and we expect to have an announcement soon,” Washington said. “While I am disappointed that Coach English did not accept our offer to retain him, I wish him continued success at Providence.”

“Coach English and his team brought the excitement back to George Mason basketball. They reminded Mason Nation and the college sports world of our basketball program’s heritage and massive potential,” Washington said.

Washington said Mason’s current search for a permanent athletics director also will be accelerated and will be completed in the coming weeks.

“We have made significant commitments to enhance our basketball and academic facilities, and along with a new athletics director, our next coach will step into an exciting new era at Mason athletics,” Washington said.

Nena Rogers, Mason’s interim athletics director, said, “I want to thank Coach English for the relentless energy and passion he infused into the George Mason basketball program over the past two years. We are grateful for the work Kim and his staff have done to position us for sustained success within the Atlantic 10 and on a national level. We wish him the very best as he embarks on his next step at Providence.”

“We have a proud basketball tradition here at George Mason. I am confident Mason will find a dynamic leader who will continue to build on that tradition,” Rogers said.

Here's why it needs to be Tony...

Aside from the dumpster full of other "That's so Mason" problems, the coaching position here is just too attractive for someone wanting to use it as a stepping stone.

Yes, there's pressure to win. Eventually. But not the same as even the upper A10s like vcu, Dayton, etc. So you have time to do your thing. You get decent competition in conferences that's still decently regarded despite recent performance.

The entire Mason fanbase is a rounding error... effectively zero. Not a ton of huge donors and fans to appease.

Media coverage is nonexistent. No local pundits will clown you on air or in print. Gtown will get fresh eyeballs now with Cooley, UMD is good again, GW will probably improve. Mason is fourth banana locally at best. Probably seventh realistically behind UVA and VT.

And somehow, batting just above .500 doesn't totally DQ you from making a leap to a major if you're still young and highly regarded.

Someone who stays 5-6 years minimum can potentially get us out of purgatory. Maybe. Tony will care and hopefully stick around. Anyone else who's not a retread or long-shot has no reason to take any of Mason's crap longer than they have to.

Very. But Providence was stronger, to the point where I think their desperation to get him since they'd already been turned down once resulted in over-payment.
