Article On Brad Edwards from Mason Spirit

Some interesting quotes from the article:

"To understand Brad Edwards’s vision for Mason athletics is to know one thing: He doesn’t like to lose."

“Our vision is to put our program in the best position to make a run at a national championship,”

"His Vision

For Edwards, it starts with the coach. After that, his vision for success begins with building a new practice facility for the team, so players aren’t competing for court space and an academic support center, so they can study and get help from tutors and learning specialists. The team should have its own strength and conditioning coach, as well as nutritionist. The team should also have the best forms of travel, so players are rested and minimize their time away from class. Finally, he envisions a renovated Patriot Center that offers a first-class experience with such features as a video scoreboard that can show instant replay, advanced lighting, wi-fi, and public areas, so the Mason Nation can congregate without missing the action."

I love Edwards' vision. I am also willing to pay to help him execute it. Hopefully many others feel the same because it's gonna take a lot of money.

Can't wait to see what he's able to get done.

I feel like if they could just get like an IPTAM situation going with young alums, it would add up quickly. Anybody can spare 10 bucks a month, directly withdrawn from their card.

I don't know why more schools don't copy the IPTAY program at Clemson. It's a program that really connects with the entire alumni/fan base, significantly expands the number of people who feel invested in the program's success and generates a lot of money.

Our donor percentage is so small for athletics, I think we need to address that before worrying about the size of their individual gifts.

I mean, how hard could it be to start that up? The hardest donation to get is the first one, so you make it a small one, make it regular, and get people used to the idea that "I can afford to give a little to GMU and not have it mean I can't pay bills". When they're 45 and making more, maybe they'll give more.

I feel like this is one of those programs that could be set up in a week, gradually rolled out, pay for itself, and have benefits beyond just the money. I can't imagine that young alums who give to Mason, even a little, aren't going to be more interested in going to the games to see what they're paying for.

Interesting interview. I'm guessing not shutting the door on football means we'll launch a team if T. Boone Pickens type money comes available. I noted the focus on FBS, not starting in FCS. But the near term focus is right, the groundwork necessary to be highly competitive in the Atlantic 1o.

Yeah, I am glad he said that in so many words. I agree with the "Lets fix what we have and get them winning", then focus on potentially adding things.

I currently donate to the Patriot Club in general, but if Mason ever starts a football program, then I would narrow my donation to go only to non-football sports. Football is a money pit.

Would you increase your donation to fund a basketball practice facility?

Looking at what Mason has done with very little (when compared to other schools), I like to think that Mason Football wouldn't be so shitty. It wouldn't be an Ohio State or FSU, but I am sure it wouldn't be a Wake Forest either. A couple good upsets, a few bowl games every couple years and a nice stadium would be just fine with me. I'd donate for a football start up.

Also, I'm just waiting for a BB Practice Facility fund to be started. Hope part of that Faster Further campaign is geared towards athletics (http://fasterfarther.gmu.edu/)

I heard there will be a piece of the campaign geared towards fundraising for athletics which would be really cool. Just not ready to be released yet.
