We had 6,100 fans for vcu last season... I'm sure if the demand was truly there, they might remove the tarps, but I don't think we've sold a game out in quite a few years (last one I can find is UVA in 2012).
They took off one tarp for a vcu game the first year the tarps came into play. It can be done.

I know Mason has tried to do a designated tailgate area a few times but it tends to draw a cringeworthy amount of fans. The effort is certainly there on Mason's part: tent, food trucks, DJ, alcohol, etc. but the area they designate for tailgate is pretty big so people stagger all over the place. The window at which the tailgate is open is pretty big, so people come in at different times, buy an $8 tallboy, drink it and leave. I think in theory, fans would prefer a less structured tailgate with a few people grilling some hotdogs and BYOB. I just don't think we're there yet as a fanbase.
It would never happen. But the first Saturday home game should be homecoming. Start the season with a tailgate. Set the tone early.

I agree, but I don’t think it’ll happen. Instead, I’ve gone back and forth thinking we should consider getting rid of Mason madness. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I think it’d keep the anticipation going (especially for the freshmen on campus). We could pour the resources saved into a big event the day of the first home game. And we could introduce a new round of Mason students to Mason Basketball with a real game instead of a (sometimes) lackluster event.

The tailgate ship sailed when Uni cops started cracking down on anything in the parking lot not run by Mason and when most of the diehards became green and gold members anyway. Nobody wants to pay for expensive drafts in a tent when you've already paid for beers inside.

Tailgate gone bye bye except for HC and even that ship has sort of sailed.

I could fix a lot of this shit if I was just allowed to interact with the students every now and then. First step would be giving me my own row in the student section and not patting me down every time I entered Pat Center.

You mean when Fro got arrested for falling off a skateboard pre-gaming?

It's a recruiting event.
Good point. But I’m not sure it’s been an effective recruiting event for us. I’m trying to think of examples or recruits that committed to Mason following a Mason madness event. I can think of a few that were in attendance and didn’t land at Mason. Most recently, Chereef Knox, I believe.

That’s an interesting thought. I think it makes a lot of sense. But the administration is probably to scared to do something like that.

To make everyone happy they should just pony up and book a good band/artist to perform at mason madness

Isaiah Jackson is one that comes to mind.
