A10 POY WATCH – Marquise Moore

Dont they pick POY for the guy who's team is in first place?

Which was my original point. Do the people have the balls to vote for Moore as POY on the potentially 8th place team in a 14 team league.

I love Moore...but my gut says not enough would vote for him despite the numbers with a bad "finish."

It's probably because it was on ESPN2 and the announcers didn't know much about the conference...probably just learned how to spell A10 right before they went on the air...

You mean the A-TIN?

If I'm not mistaken, Marquis was not included on any of the 3 preseason all conference teams. While we are acutely aware of his value, he's going to have to leapfrog 15 other very good players who were named at the beginning of the season. He's earned it but not being on a team at the top of the conference nor in the preseason conversation for POY will make it a heavy lift.

The opposing team's defenses would suggest the coaches all respect what he's doing this season. I wonder if there is any other player in the league who literally sometimes have all 5 opposing defenders collapse on them?

How does the A10 select a POY? Is it by consensus of coaches? ADs? SIDs? A combination of any of those three or some other body?

My point is, if the selection is made by A10 afflilated "officials" then these individuals certainly know Marquise Moore's body of work.

I think it is coaches and media that follows the conference, if I recall.

the POY should go to the best PLAYER and not the MVP. However, I don't have confidence that those voting will select a player outside the top 5 teams.

Cline is an offensive beast, but I think Moore is an overall better PLAYER. He can score, he can defend, and there hasn't been a guard who can rebound like him in years.

I believe they announce the person, they walk out an see Paulsen at halfcourt. As they are walking out the announcer reads their accomplishments and tells everybody to clap for the player. I think after that is a good time to get the M-V-P chant going.

Yep, that is what I envision.

Wait... what?!? I think you're talking apples to apples here. In my book, POY=MVP.

P-O-Y doesn't have the same ring as M-V-P. I think people either don't care about the difference or don't know about the difference.
It probably depends on the judging criteria. I'm not an official judge.

I just think chanting MVP rings more poetically than POY.

I nominate you to be the official judge! :)
OK, last night's performance of Marquise is exactly why he should be POY. He fell short of his scoring average, but still managed to smash the boards with 13 rebounds.

TJ Cline had a sub-par shooting night as well. He did have 7 assists, but didn't contribute much on the defensive end—only 3 rebounds.

Cline is a forward who expected to get rebounds. Quise is a guard who is not expected to haul in the missed shots. So, who's the better player?

Plus, it was crystal clear what Duquesne's game plan was: Stop Marquise Moore.

If you're still up, the #A10POY watch just went up too. Here you go: http://giantkiller.co/ByGeorge/2017/03/03/a10-player-of-the-year-watch-4/…

"THE FAVORITE: Jaylen Adams, St. Bonaventure

19.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.1 steals, 0.1 blocks

22.5 PER, 27.2% USG, 1.52 PPFGA

I’ve spoken my peace on Jaylen in previous posts, so I want to point out something interesting – his shooting percentage is really bad (38.6% from the floor, 47.4% eFG) but he gets to the free throw line so much it doesn’t matter. He’s shooting 9.1 free throws per game in conference and hitting about 80% of them, so he still scores at a very efficient rate compared to the number of shots he takes.

SO CLOSE: Marquise Moore, George Mason

16.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.7 blocks

23.5 PER, 26.2% USG, 1.34 PPFGA

Mason has played four games since the last A10POY post and Marquise had sub-par scoring outings in two of them (12 points on 12 shots against Dayton, 8 points on 11 shots against Duquesne). He also has only 11 assists in the past four games, so a couple things are trending in the wrong direction for him. He’s still in the two spot on the strength of his incredibly unique season, the colossal load he’s asked to carry for the young Patriots, and his ability to defend the opponent’s best perimeter player night in and night out. He has an opportunity to finish the season with an exclamation point on the road against vcu tomorrow."
