GMU - AQ - #12 Seed
Richmond - #9 seed
According to the brackets, we're just 2 wins away from a potential matchup against JuJu Watkins!!

Interesting that he has St. Joe's and the 2d team out....seems overly generous for a team that's lost 5 of their last 7. Does this guy work for Lunardi (who has ties with St Joe's).

Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis celebrates after cutting down the net following George Mason's victory in the Atlantic 10 tournament title game. (Amber Searls/Imagn Images)

"Senior guard Paula Suárez led the way with 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting with six rebounds and six assists. Zahirah Walton, a redshirt sophomore forward who led the Patriots in scoring this season and was an all-conference first-team selection, had 19 points and eight rebounds. Mason shot 50 percent from the field (24 for 48) and 40 percent from three-point range (6 for 15) while holding St. Joseph’s to 33.3 percent shooting (20 for 60). The Patriots also made 10 more trips to the free throw line (28 to 18) and had seven more makes from the stripe (19-12)."

In a championship/NCAA game I can't come up with a bigger performance than Suarez yesterday by any Mason player man or woman. Closest I can come up with is George Evans against UMD in Boise, but that ultimately came in a losing effort. There were huge plays (Folarin over Gay/Tony 3 to seal bracket buster/Luke 3 vs. Villanova/etc.) but not complete game dominations like this. Was nice to see a senior put the team on her back and refuse to lose like that. What other performances am I missing that would compare? Maybe Folarin against MSU?

On December 7, 1996, Nate Langley and the Patriots defeated Chauncey Billups and the Colorado Buffaloes 85-81 at the Patriot Center - https://www.washingtonpost.com/arch...rado-81/fe61ee2d-3300-479a-b46b-b1e3c941ca1b/

"However, the Patriots achieved perhaps the most meaningful victory in Westhead's tenure yesterday when they defeated Colorado, 85-81, in front of a crowd of 2,481 at Patriot Center in Fairfax, which saluted the victors with a standing ovation.

George Mason (3-1), which finished last in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament in 1995-96 to punctuate a forgettable season, was picked to finish eighth among nine teams in this year's CAA preseason poll.

Senior guard Nate Langley, the 1992-93 All-Met player of the year at Dunbar High, has been spectacular in the first four games, averaging 24.5 points. He scored 28 yesterday to go with 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds."

"The Buffaloes (4-2), who entered with wins over Auburn and Virginia Tech, were led by guard Chauncy Billups' 21 points.

Mason Guard Demetrius Somerville, who made 4 of 7 three-point attempts, scored 16 and guard Contrel Scott (10 points) made all six of his free throw attempts. Scott has made 20 of 22 free throw attempts this season.

George Mason trailed 53-42 with 14 minutes 31 seconds remaining, but with 5:45 left the Patriots took their first lead, 68-65, when Bernard Wanjara converted a fast break layup after a pass from Langley and coverted the free throw after he was fouled. The Patriots were able to outscore Colorado 50-39 in the second half because of their zone defense and solid defensive rebounding. Nik Mirich had 11 rebounds (10 defensive) and Avery Carey had nine (seven defensive)."

Didn't we also beat a Barles Charkley led Auburn team one year?

This is the banner in the practice facility that VBL mentions in the post championship press conference. I took this picture back in July and thought that was bold of her to put that up, but, she and the team backed it up with their actions. I hope they do a red strikethrough of the "future" part and leave it up.

I get Chauncey was a big opponent, but I'm not sure a December Noon tip home game in front of 1,500 people is the same as a team's first ever conference championship game. Great performance, but in a fairly unimportant game.
