What specifically does this mean from John Rothstein:

1. The Atlantic 10 is NOT a mid-major league.
2. The Atlantic 10 needs to market itself different nationally.
3. The Atlantic 10 needs to identify creative scheduling opportunities for its best teams to have the proper representation in the NCAA Tournament.

Rothstein says a lot of things. Whatever his robot mind feels like spewing at that moment. Next he will talk about random players being impactful and they’ll end up averaging 3 points a game.

Of course, we could try to do what the WCC does for Gonzaga and protect our top teams in-conference, but that’s hard when it’s not always the same team.

I think Rothstein is on the right page. A couple things we could do, and I think it was said on here, possibly by @fivetwo, is leave some flexibility in our schedule:

1. Leave an open game late in the conference schedule that is flex. Then the conference can schedule it dynamically based on how teams have performed. If it helps to have the top two teams play each other, then do that. Then schedule the bottom two teams the same and all those in the middle. Whatever gives the best chance of impressing the committee or improving NET to get more at larges.
2. Team with another top conference to create our own bracket buster-like event late in the season. Have the top two teams go against each other, etc.

One of these is entirely in control of the A10 and one just takes an agreement with another conference that is near us in stature. I would think they would be looking for the same thing.

I think Rothstein is on the right page. A couple things we could do, and I think it was said on here, possibly by @fivetwo, is leave some flexibility in our schedule:

1. Leave an open game late in the conference schedule that is flex. Then the conference can schedule it dynamically based on how teams have performed. We did have that agreement with the Mountain West, which is the closest we have to a peer conference at our level. COVID screwed that one up, and I'm not sure if there are any plans to rekindle it.

If not them, I'm not sure if there really is another conference with enough juice to make it worthwhile...the AAC got gutted (although with Memphis and Wichita State still there, it would be a lot better than some alternatives out there); without BYU, the WCC isn't as appealing (Gonzaga would never agree to do it, so you'd have to do a Gonzaga-less WCC challenge). The MVC has been weakened considerably. And once you get below the MVC, any other conferences would probably be overall negative resume creators (CAA, MAC, WAC, etc. -- good enough to maybe pull some upsets, not good enough to give you enough Q1/Q2 games to move conference rating).

I think Gonzaga would entertain a WCC-A10 challenge if they always get to host their game, which if I were the A10 I would be all over it. If you block off a weekend (like the bracket busters did) and put the top team in the A10 vs Gonzaga they would be all for it. We are almost guaranteed to have a top 30-35 team in the A10 every year and Gonzaga is not afraid to play those teams. Then go down the list and put the 2nd place team in each conference against each other and so on.

While I still stand by my flex scheduling, I have to give the A10 some credit. As part of the deal where we willingly give up Brooklyn as the site of the tournament in certain years, the conference gets neutral site games against P5s in Brooklyn each Nov and Dec.
