2021-22 Schedule Thread

I agree with 99% of this but unless it’s a covid year there is very little benefit in those area P5s playing us. They are already in the area and the recruits come to their schools to watch them play. They don’t want to play a middle of the road mid major that could upset them and ruin their season. If anything we might be able to snag a mid level ACC or SEC team that recruits the DMV to come play at the Pat Dome. That works just fine for me because odds are that mid level team will beat at least one top 25 squad during the year. The LIUs and Longwoods of the world probably won’t beat a top 150 team during the season.
yeah, fair point. Very possible the local teams hedge at playing us because there's always the risk of being upset, and the recruiting element is one I didn't consider... but I can see that angle too. I'd just like to see some local teams for regional interest purposes/fan attendance. Plus, these local teams of ours have been pretty legit on a national scale. Would a middle of the pack SEC or ACC team help our SOS much? I'm doubtful. But hey... at this point... who am I to complain about playing an Auburn, S. Carolina, or Pitt? Although... I could definitely get behind a Miami game or two, regardless of how bad they are right now.

Even if it’s one of those Away-Home-Away game contracts for us, I think we take it. Give me a two for one all day to get UVA back here or Tech in town.
I totally agree with this. We are in no position right now to be picky on where we play and how often. We just need good game that test and prepare our players for conference play, first and foremost, and secondarily contribute to a solid SoS for any potential at=large hopes - when we eventually get back to that point.

I've been saying for years, and I know it will probably never happen, but a DC tourney similar to the Big 5 would be awesome. Georgetown, Maryland, Mason, GW, American, Howard, etc... would be great to have in the area. I can always dream.

Georgetown has played Mason just once in men's basketball; i.e., the inaugural season at the EBA.

Georgetown plays several area schools. During the COVID year they played UMBC, Coppin State, and Navy

Last year they played Mt. St. Mary's, UMBC, and American; 2019 Maryland-Eastern Shore, Howard; 2018 Howard, Mt. St. Marys, Coppin State (It actually looks like they play Howard and Coppin State a lot).

IMO, Georgetown's OOC Schedule is about as bad a Mason's (hopefully this is in the past)

Mason could create its own invitational and host 2 teams over 3 days. Maybe UMBC and JMU. We play UMBC on Friday, UMBC plays JMU on Saturday, we play JMU on Sunday.

Additionally, with KE's star power still strong in Missouri, I could see Mizzou wanting to schedule Mason for a mid-week game as a ticket sales boost.

Yea there will always be a couple of VA schools on our schedule every year just makes sense logistics wise (not far too travel) and butts in seats since D.C. is a melting pot of all VA schools alumni.

Would love to schedule some SEC schools in the future. Looking at you Tenn! :)

Not sure if its possible to get in the field, but the preseason NIT has that sort of opportunity in general with the winner of each "host" site going to Brooklyn. I would love for Mason to make it into that field.

The JMU rivalry might be losing some heat. Used to draw over 7k for them, but the last four times we played them at home we only broke 4,000 once (this is going back to the CAA days). Last time we had good attendance for this game was on 1/28/2012 with 8,000. Could be because both teams have pretty much sucked since 2012, too, so we'll see.

I strongly encourage everyone to email the AD and KE and tell them Mason NEEDS to be in the Diamond Head Classic this fall.

Weird. But I guess I makes sense. Seeding the matchups will be an impossible task after last season. Hopefully with a full slate of games they can start up in 22

"The premise of the event was to generate more Quad 1 opportunities for both leagues during the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Only four teams combined from the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West — St. Bonaventure, vcu, San Diego State, and Utah State — reached the 2021 NCAA Tournament."

Why not take a calculated risk and match up the #1 preseason ranked from each conference - and advertise it as an example of what comes as we recover from Covid-19???

Bona is going to be no. 1 and they are going to be a Q1 game for anyone unless something catastrophic happens.
