Lamar Butler photo of him pounding his chest to the fans after 2006 Tourney victory over UConn seen in the backdrop of the CBS studio while Charles, Kenny, etc. yammer during ND v Princeton halftime. I'll always remember that image!

Last weekend right before brackets came out....Steve Hartman on Fox Sports Radio was talking about how to pick upsets.....focusing on the Mids and smaller schools....need a veteran team, etc.

In doing so it was all about us in 2006...how he and his co-host had stayed in Indy at the same hotel as the team, got to know them, what it means to be in the tournament as a non P5 etc.

the March Madness radio commercial is using classic tv calls and 'By George the dream is alive!" is used right before the Laettner shot against Kentucky. Both called by Uncle Vern.

Regular listeners to Kornheiser's show will remember that "Phil's Mom" who picked Mason to go far in our Final Four year--had us beating UCONN-- (to many guffaws in the radio studio) would have won Tony's brackets this year, had Gonzaga won last night. Coach L was later told this when he was on the phone line with the show commenting, "That's one smart lady!".

Gonzaga was a true 1 seed and proved themselves more than worthy in this tournament (tied score with less than 2 min to go in the national title game)...was Korny saying they weren't legit as a non-P5 contender?

Nope. The question was "If Gonzaga beats UNC is that an upset?" They both said slightly to no. He said "Gonzaga isn't vcu... Gonzaga isn't George Mason... Gonzaga isn't Butler pre-Runner up run." They were pretty much saying Gonzaga should no longer be viewed as a mid-major/Cinderella type team.

And they are certainly correct in that statement.

Mason's, and to a slightly lesser extent vcu's, trips to the Final Four were extraordinary because they snuck up on their opponents. They were not known nor projected to be teams that could destroy brackets beyond one tournament upset. Gonzaga has been a known commodity for 10+ years now. They've been a tough team in the NCAAs since Adam Morrison tore through the 2006 Tourney. So, the current Gonzaga team didn't come out of nowhere thia year like Mason did in 2006.

Just did the math, with UNC's latest Championship, that brings the total to 7 National Championships and 20 Final Fours combined among the coaches we beat to reach the Final Four. The coaches' combined totals of the teams vcu beat are 1 National Championship and 3 Final Fours. I believe that should be more than enough to squash whose run was more remarkable.

Technically, Carolina has 6 NCAA titles. The won the national championship in 1924 prior to the NCAAT, which would be 7. Duke only has 5. Just saying.

Were the numbers crunched the coaches?

Tom Izzo has one at Michigan State. (2000)
Roy Williams (2005, 2009, 2017)
Jim Calhoun (1999, 2004, 2009, 2011)

That's eight actually.

I was referring to just the accomplishments of Izzo, Williams and Calhoun. Crazy to think that those numbers don't include Mark Turgeon who's a pretty decent coach in my opinion.

Interesting Read...

A free-agent culture: How transfers are killing Cinderella
https://www.si.com/college-basketba...sketball-transfers-cinderella-ncaa-tournament

"In just five seasons, the sport’s “up-transfer” transfer culture has shifted the landscape of college basketball so dramatically that runs like George Mason from the Colonial Athletic Association in 2006 and Butler from the Horizon League in 2010 and 2011 are dramatically more difficult."

For Washington sports, that would be bigger than the Terps 2002 national title, since our region is hardly unified behind Maryland. It would be bigger than George Mason, since our region mostly doesn’t care about George Mason. It would be more significant than the Redskins drafting Robert Griffin III, or the return of Joe Gibbs, since neither of those proved to be transformative, if you put aside RGIII transforming into a breathing hashtag. Ditto for Michael Jordan’s decision to play for the Wizards, an event not one person (who doesn’t work at the Ritz) celebrates now. It would be more significant than the Redskins beating the Cowboys to end the 2012 season, or the Redskins winning in Tampa to get into the NFL quarterfinals.

Nothing could be bigger than our run!

May have to set up a 3rd TV in the basement - completely forgot about O's/Nats!
