We may not like it, but O'Connor may be part of the plan at PG.
I'm not sure I get the O'Connor PG opposition here. While not coming in as a PG he beat out KD/JB/JQ for the spot, and while there were growing pains he was solid by the end of the year. He played 31 minutes against vcu in the championship game and turned it over only once, while being in a starting lineup where he was really the only one who could attack off the dribble. If he's our starter in the fall I won't be upset at all.

Would explain why Tony has only really targeted one in Mincy so far. O’Connor is solid. I just don’t love it, because I think we will need to speed the pace of the offense up a bit without a Haynes-like presence in the post. Having O’Connor at point does make it easier to switch 1-4 defensively though, if that’s the plan.

Agreed this very much looks like a roster built around attacking guards instead of a low post big. For that reason I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tony start both BOC and Mincy, then they alternate rest while keeping at least one on the floor in a rotation with Hill, Troutman, Long and Booker.

Having two ballhandlers who shoot above 35% from 3 will also help space the floor so Hill and others can get to the rim.

I definitely agree that he was much better in the tournament and in the NIT - however there were several games (and moments) where he had some key mistake that really came down to his experience at point guard. If available, it would be good to get someone to help.

Hes fine if hes a 1b with Mincy assuming he has a good summer and puts in the work (I think he will). I still think we need a 3rd option to help them out (Tre Wood like). I also wouldn't be opposed if we find a KD, and the spot is shared across making O'connor more of the 3rd option at least on paper. I just want us to have more than Mincy/O'connor at PG.

Does O'Conner stay if he is not a starter?
He has less than a week to figure that out.
Why would Skinn announce any starters in the off-season? Im sure O'Connor knows he will get good minutes if he plays well.

I really dont get the hate on O'Connor. He was the smartest guard we had this year, didnt take bad shots, was a good driver, and an average passer. He's a crafty combo guard, and a player you can trust with the ball in his hands.

As far as I know, everyone that wasnt here last year is a big ?, until proven otherwise. Give me some known resources.

For the record, I love O'Connor. Questioning whether he is best suited at PG doesn't equal hate. I'm not calling for him to not play 30 mins/game.

My main issue is turnovers - he had 3 or 4 to's in 15 out of the first 32 games, including 4 against GW in 1st round of A10 tournament.

He was much better in last 4 games (A10 semi's and finals, and 2 NIT games) with only a combined 2 to's, while having 4, 3, 4 and 6 assists. That is outstanding.

If the last 4 games, against 4 of the best teams we played all year, is the typical performance we get - sign me up. It is just too small of a sample size to know that is the player he has now become.

But the kid has a great attitude and work ethic, I love his hustle, energy and scoring ability and am optimistic of the possibility of him having a breakthrough senior season - I just don't know if we should rely on it happening.

Our biggest issues last year were poor outside shooting and to's. The guys we are bringing in seem to be collectively better 3pt shooters than what they are replacing, but the to numbers are concerning.

How can head coaches put up with this crap? I predict that at some point fairly soon all of the portal/NIL BS is going to implode.
Put up with it? They are as much part of the problem as anyone else. First, they are the ones bidding players away and/or pushing them out. Second they do the same thing. Wasn't it just reaffirmed to us loud and clear just weeks ago that the coaches, themselves, are always in the portal.

You know what would be funny to see? A coaches transfer portal. If a coach wants to look for another job, then they have to declare for the portal. Then we don't have this lame excuse of I was just practicing my interview skills, etc. This would never happen, but, it highlights in some ways how a transfer portal creates some problems for the players. They can't keep their desire to explore their options somewhat secret like the coaches can. They have to declare they are looking, and then are subject to coaches that insist they are gone once they enter the portal. Seems like somewhat of a double standard.

I'm not sure this is a realistic idea, but I would think at some point, schools might push for some kind of collective bargaining where they might be able to offer multi-year payments for those with more than 1 year of eligibility left (contingent on the student maintaining academic eligibility). Clearly, the pro leagues do a version of this. Schools could take out insurance against the player having a serious season or career-ending injury.

That way, coaches don't have to recruit a mostly new group of players every year.

Surprised we haven’t been linked to more bigs. Guessing Skinn’s really high on Kanga, even as a true freshman.

No reason not to trust him though—his track record with big men speaks for itself. Amari Kelly, Haynes, and Gio was a damn good piece off the bench.

Collective Bargaining implies employees
coaches and staff are employees of the University
NCAA will fight tooth and nail against players becoming employees - but IMO it is just a matter of time until they also lose that case

in the long term
NCAA Men's BBall splits into Divisions based on NIL Budgets

Or the current bigs he’d like are out of our price range and Tony is waiting for some asking prices to drop a little.

Also a huge double standard that coaches have to buy their way out of their contracts while players can change schools or decide to stop playing (ooh my ankle has an ouchie!) at any time with zero accountability or consequences.
