Fordham closed out the regular season 15-15 and 8-10 in A10 play. They were 10-4 at home, 3-9 on the road, and 2-2 at neutral sites.


History: Including tournament play GMU is 5-7 vs Fordham as a member of the A10.

We lost to the Rams 50-47 when we played them at Fordham on January 12. We shot 35% from the field and 25% from 3 in the loss. We only got to the free throw line 5 times! The Rams did a fabulous job containing our big 4. Oduro (foul trouble early), Shwartz, Cooper, and Gaines were a combined 11-29 from the field for a total of only 26 points. They dared XJ to shoot and he did to the tune of 6-16 (5-14) from the floor. They banged us and beat us physically. Fordham shot 40% from the floor and 33.3% from 3. They were just 2-9 from the foul line. Chuba Ohams paced the Rams with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He is a very tough match-up for Josh. It was an ugly game all around, but that style fits Fordham.

Edit: this is stated really poorly. Neptune has done a better job in his first year than English has. And it also hard to argue that Neptune had more to work with.

Not to sound like a Kim-pologist, but that’s a really simplistic analysis and I don’t think it’s comparing apples to apples. Mason played a harder schedule than Fordham OOC and the second-hardest schedule of any A-10 team.

Neptune gets blown because Fordham has been so dreadful for so long, but they also benefited from the A-10’s unbalanced schedule — half of their 8 wins came against Duquesne and LaSalle, the two worst teams in the league. They hadn’t beaten a team ahead of them in the standings until the final game of the regular season. No way they finish 8-10 against Mason’s schedule.

Respectfully none of that rebuts my points. Fordham took advantage of playing a softer schedule. Give Mason 2 games apiece against Duquesne and LaSalle, give Fordham 2 games apiece against vcu and Richmond, and there’s no way they finish ahead of us. Zero chance.

They finished ahead of us because they hold the head-to-head.

They also did play Davidson twice. And they swept La Salle and we lost to them (another reason they finished ahead of us). They also swept GW and we went 1-1 (yet a third reason why they finished ahead of us.

So, yes, we played a tougher schedule but we also lost to some pretty meh teams (including Fordham) and they largely avoided doing that.
