Welcome Jamal Hartwell

Giving the boards a sneak peak of the next video I'm dropping. I really think Hartwell is in for a big season. He's probably the only player on the squad who can create his own jump shot off the dribble.

So far these highlights videos have been a hit. The players seem to really get into them. I'm just trying to create a little hype for them before they get back to Mason and start practicing.

All highlights and videos were shot and edited by Liem. Taking this shit next level!

My questions about our situation at the PG are well documented at this point, but this is a pretty sick look. If Jamal came out as a facilitator with a serviceable outside jumper next year, I’d be very, very happy.

You all may be a little young, but when George Evans re-committed to GMU after Westhead left, we needed a PG. We got 6'3 Jason Miskiri. I thought Coach L had a gift for bringing in big, fast and excellent on ball defenders for the PG spot. Then we signed 5'10 Tremaine Price the year after. If Jamal, is close to Price in terms of assists and toughness....i have no issue with Jamal playing major mins for KE.

Tremaine Price was in the same recruiting class of 1997 as George Evans, Jason Miskiri, Erik Herring, and Terrance Nixon along with D-I transfer Keith Holdan. In fact, Tremaine was the starting PG until Miskiri was eligible after the 1997 fall semester.

Wow... talk about a killer class. Every single one of those guys played an instrumental role in building up the Mason basketball brand and setting the table for coaches to recruit the players who served as the nucleus of the 2006 Final Four team.

I know this topic has been beat like a dead horse on these forums, but it's a damn shame that Evans and Miskiri's jerseys/numbers aren't in the rafters. I hope English and his focus on honoring past players can eventually rectify this.

I think Jamal currently does have a serviceable outside jump shot, way better than XJ's, and better than Polite's small sample size.

Jamal's issue is whether he can guard the opposing team's starting PG.

Yeah I should have clarified -- I do think Jamal currently has a serviceable jumper. What I would like to see is a shift in his play style to be more of a facilitator than a scorer. I'd like to see him driving to create opportunities for others, either defenders collapsing to help and he kicks it out for an open look to a shooter or bigs helping up and he lobs it over the top for an easy oop like in the video.

I can get over his defensive shortcomings if he is averaging 6+ APG. The last few seasons he has shown flashes that he can drive, but he is always going to be too small to finish through contact, and I hate that mid range pull up or floater halfway up the lane. Drive to create for others and the team will benefit much more because of it.

I'm thinking we are going to see an even platoon in non conference this year at the PG spot until one guy clearly takes it.

1.2 for his career.

Yeah Dave's offense never really was built for a facilitator PG. Looking at Otis' numbers, who I think we can all agree was the best facilitator we've had in the last decade, he only averaged 4 APG over his career, and never had over 4.4 for a season. Our offense just hasn't been build around a PG distributing and driving to create opportunities for others. The only way I see Hartwell being successful next season is if that's what English has in mind for the PG spot -- someone who can create for others rather than a primary scoring option.

One of DP's many mistakes was believing that he could develop undersized players. He should have recruited over Otis in year 2 and never should have recruited Jamal. We didn't win anything with Otis (65-67) and we won't if Jamal plays significant minutes. Unless, KE makes it clear that Jamal has two jobs, to pass the ball and defend like an SOB. I just don't see him being particularly capable of either. He hasn't shown it after 3 years. Hard to win if your point guard is (-10) every night. We agree on a lot of things, this just isn't one of them.

Hartwell Defensive +\- last year was -0.6, as a freshman it was -3.1 (still not anywhere close to -10). Stop with the hyperbole.

As for why we didn’t win with Otis, playing with no forwards and 8 available scholarship players might do that to a team. I wouldn’t blame it on his height.

Edit: for comparison’s sake, XJ was -3.8 last season, Polite was -6.4.
