Can't really blame her for entering the portal. Her freshman year she is teamed up with Natalie Butler, who has a once-in-generation type of season, and the best the team can do is the NIT. Its been downhill ever since.

https://www.hoosiersportsreport.com/2020/04/iu-women-pick-up-transfer-cardano-hillary/:

"The Indiana University women’s basketball team landed an important piece for the 2020-21 season late Thursday night when George Mason grad transfer Nicole “Nikki” Cardano-Hillary committed to the Hoosiers."

"Cardano-Hillary heads to Bloomington as the all-time leading scorer for the Patriots with 1,766 points in three seasons, winning Atlantic-10 Player of the Year in 2019 when she averaged a career-best 20.4 points per game.

She was on the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, along with current Hoosier Ali Patberg, heading into the 2019-20 season when she averaged 18.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game during a 9-21 campaign. That included a career-high 41 points against Penn State in November en route to a second team all-conference berth."

Nyla Milleson's record at Mason is 95-121 (40-72 A10).

Don't really follow WBB very much but I do occasionally look at box scores so someone who watches all the women's game feel free to correct me. It seemed as though the whole game plan is just feed the ball to Cardano-Hillary. Or at least every time she got the ball she would just shoot. All the opposing team had to do was just lock her down defensively and our game plan is shot.

Looked at her season statistics... she took 30% of the total team FG attempts. It would probably jump to 35% if you included shots that she got fouled and missed. To put it into perspective, Javon had the most FG attempts on the men's side at 339 attempts in 31 games. Cardano-Hillary had 534 attempts in 30 games. The fact that Cardano-Hillary shot 57.5% more than Javon in less games is insane. That would be fine if she was an efficient scorer but she shot a low .356% FG and .277% 3FG%. Her assist/turnover ration was also 0.811. Not good for anyone, especially a point guard.

Anyone who is familiar with the women's team, was she really that dominate or was her stats just super inflated cause she shot a million times?

Seems like you answered your own question. Not that I blame her for shooting all the time ... since Natalie Butler left the women’s team hasn’t had many other scoring options.

I mean without sounding sexist, I don't know if her stats are good for women's basketball. Different style of game. But clearly she's decent if Indian picked her up. Regardless best of luck to her and thanks for her 3 years at Mason.

I saw a bunch of her games over the past 3 years and Jim is correct, after Natalie left, the offense was NCH to try and get a clean look before the shot clock expired. They had a transfer 2 years ago that was supposed to be decent (came from a P5 school, I think), but she decided not to play. They didnt bring in players that could help ease the burden.

Sounds like a girl with a girl with some smarts in the classroom and on the court. Glad she'll get to play meaningful collegiate basketball for a year.

This is what Kier wants to do. Not only does this suck now, but it will be how it is in the future. We will be a feeding ground for P5 programs. This needs to change.

I don’t disagree but the rules aren’t going to change to help programs like Mason.

The reality is, the basketball programs have to get better — our own players shouldn’t have to leave if they want more than a long shot chance of playing in the NCAA tournament.

IMO, The reality is the playing field is being controlled in favor of the P5 programs that have big tv deals. They dont wanna have bottom feeders in their conferences. They want them all in the dance and getting all the money that comes with it.

This is a travesty. Mason, the trailblazing program that opened the path for mid majors should be again trailblazing the defense of college basketball before the greedy f**ks in the acc, sec etc run a monopoly and further ruin the college game. Before the current tv situation, only some were on TV. Now everybody is on tv. However, the real tv is the network prime time slots and espn/fox....the crumbs fall to NBC, espn+.

Re programs getting better, it's going to be impossible when top players can get poached or easily leave w/o sitting a year. It will be like a walmart, constant flow of players who dont really wanna be here.

The method of building a team will definitely change on our level. No more developing guys gradually ... coaches are going to have to re-recruit a new roster every year. Sucks but that’s where we’re headed.

At the end of the day every team still has 13 scholarships. If the P5s poach all the transfers that means high mid majors like the A10 should recruit better. Can’t recruit all the best and take the transfers from small schools, numbers just don’t work out.

That’s true, but the successful mid-major model of building around a veteran core has to change if your best players regularly transfer to P5s. It will be basically impossible to have roster continuity.

Recruiting “better” won’t make any difference if we’re playing with freshmen and sophomores who stay for a couple years to build their resume and then bounce.

Might be helpful if the next NBA CBA eliminates the one-and-done rule -- that rule started the death knell of the college game. And there's really no reason for it to exist now that the NBA is building out a decent minor league system in the G-League.
