Editor Heavren,

The George Mason Men's Basketball Team is the flagship sports team of our school. We have struggled the past 5 years under Dave Paulsen.

It is time for a hard hitting article that asks:

1. Why is it taking so long to rebuild the program? Our last NCAA bid was 2011. Paulsen got here in 2015. This is a fair question.

2. Do people go to the games any more? It seems like the students sit during the games or play with their phones? This is a far cry from the days of the Patriot Platoon when I was there (2006-2010).

3. Ask Brad Edwards and Dave Paulsen what the current state of the program is. Ask Dave Paulsen what his long term plan is to get us back to where we were in 2011 (i/e winning a game in the NCAA tournament)

4. Dave Paulsen makes around 400 thousand a year. Are we getting a good return on investment with him?

reenactment of the Cleveland Rocks intro from the Drew Carey Show?

Your New York wit aside...

What do you think of the questions I posed. Do you think anything will come of this?

I you remember I sparked similar action for Broadside to write about Hewitt...

Email bedwards@gmu.edu- dont go to the student newspaper. They'll be too busy worrying about parking being priced too high instead.

400K is his base salary.

So what. He still makes another 300k+ on top of his base salary. Like Dawgs said, heaven forbid Mason show they are pay this guy over 700k via base salary, they would close the school down. To break it down further, base pay shows up on state budget reports. Supplement pay is shady and the state can look the other way easier.

Back in the days of hard-hitting student journalism at Mason there was gmujim. When we sucked, he would send (on) crack reporter Jollay over to Ernie Nestor to ask him why.

Then, when gmujim graduamacated and Jollay took over, he would send Matt "The Machete" Young out to ask the hard questions of Westhead.

Then when AD Jack Kvancz called my journalism adviser to complain about too many hard questions, Jollay would resign and then go drink with his fraternity.

Then I don't know what Matt did when he was in charge.

Why aren't you writing to the Board of Visitors instead?

I suggest that you don't focus on the source of funding (i.e., state funding, sponsorship, apparel contracts, media fees, etc.) but, rather, the cost to hire and employ Coach Paulsen in pay and benefits - https://giantkiller.co/2019/11/06/d...ontract-emerge-including-an-attendance-bonus/. For example, I assume that Mason paid the $250,000 buyout from his Bucknell contract.

In addition to his base salary and supplemental pay, Paulsen is also eligible for bonuses. One bonus that he earns on April 30th each year is the retention bonus of $25,000. There is an academic performance bonus of $25,000 that he's received. And, there are several other bonuses that he could potentially earn including an attendance bonus.

And, there is the buyout provision. If the university terminates his contract, he will receive 1/2 of the base salary for the remaining year(s) of his contract.

This is all true. LOL.
