Welcome Daniel Relvao

He's from Portugal. From an article "Relvao is considered more of a project who has been only been playing basketball since November of 2012. He toiled for Portugal's U-18 team in the European championships, averaging a tournament high 3.3 blocks over nine games in Bulgaria."

His stats from the tourney show he's at least a competent FT shooter, but maybe a bit of a turnover machine.

From some guy last fall (take it for what it's worth): Daniel Relvao (’96): Despite the young age, Relvao has several qualities which make of him an interesting prospect. For example he has a good middle-rage jump-shot and remarkable post-movements. Unfortunately he isn’t an athletic player and his feet aren’t fast enough; however, he has strong hands, useful to grab rebounds. If he wants to do better, he has to work mainly on the control of his body, a necessary skill to make the difference on the court, both in defense and in attack.

The kid definitely has great height, wingspan and size, and his frame looks like it can take even more muscle mass. Now we just need Paulsen and his staff to work on his fundamentals and turn him into an A10 player.

Yeah, this one feels a little bit like a "we should add another big in case Jalen decides to play somewhere else for his fifth season" insurance signing. Hope I'm wrong and the kid becomes all-conference. Welcome to Mason.

I had to look up where Grundy, Va. is. Wow. It's WAAAAY out there.

Grundy is a HS wrestling powerhouse, they are waaaaayyyy country. Running joke when I was in HS was that the top video rental in Grundy was the State Championship wrestling highlight video (may have been actually true).

Welcome to Fairfax and congratulations on getting out of Grundy Mr. Relvao!

A work in progress but should Paulsen get the best out of him, he'll at least be a big body in the middle!

Vashil Fernandez returning to Valparaiso

July 30, 2015 10:05 am • By Paul Oren pgmado@gmail.com

"The cat is finally out of the bag and Vashil Fernandez is officially back as a member of the Valparaiso men’s basketball team.

Valpo Athletics made the announcement on Thursday afternoon, first with a video montage of Fernandez highlights set to Eminem's iconic "guess who's back" and then with an official release.

Shortly after sending out the official release, the 2015-16 roster was updated on the Valparaiso athletics website and incoming freshman Daniel Relvao was not listed."

"Word first started to leak in May that Fernandez was returning to Valparaiso and wild speculation began about which player would not join the 2015-16 roster due to scholarship limitations."

"I wrote earlier this summer about just how difficult the process was for Valparaiso to come to a decision as to who to release."

"Sources have indicated that the hope is that Relvao will enroll at a JUCO and then join the Crusaders in the fall of 2016.

The fact that Relvao became the “expendable” player shows just how “all-in” Drew is going to go for this season. The Crusaders return every notable player from last season’s record-breaking season. Valparaiso returns more than 97.4 percent in every notable offensive category from last season, including 98.4 percent of minutes played and 98.8 percent of points scored. The Crusaders return 100 percent of steals and 97.4 percent of blocked shots. Adding the reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year will do that."

Relvao had an offer from Rhode Island in the past as well...

“We are very excited to announce the addition of Daniel to our basketball family,” said Drew. “Daniel has great length and shot-blocking ability, as well as a very good touch from the floor. He has been coached very well by the Portuguese National Team coaches and by Coach Pawel Mrozik at Mountain Mission School, which should help with his transition to college.”

From a Valpo fan board: "George Mason isn't the George Mason of the past. Daniel is probably a better fit there. He'll get more playing time at George Mason than he would've at Valpo."

Guess we shouldn't be surprised that Valpo fans don't know anything about our depth chart given that we have been less than relevant for the past four years. But I still find it interesting that the poster assumes Valpo has more talent at the 4 and 5 spots than we do.

Gotta say, the sooner DP makes it so we're once again looking down the food chain at schools like Valparaiso, the happier I'll be.

Ummm, his senior highlights are quite impressive, pretty excited about both of these late editions now:

(senior highlights are embedded in the link above, I guess those kids over at giantikiller are better at internets then we are)

I didn't catch this when I copied and pasted, but he's only been playing since November of 2012. that means in the highlights above, he had been playing the game for like 2 years. He's actually REALLY skilled for a guy who has been playing for two years. Very confident with either hand. I'm more intrigued now that I realize that. Wonder what his upside is.

I mean, do you not think it's a safe assumption? Do you think we're the George Mason of the past?

While I try not to draw conclusions one way or the other from highlight videos designed to show kids at their best, Daniel's senior video is leaps and bounds better than the one from his junior season.

His ability to elevate and finish plays with dunks is the most noticeable difference between the two videos.

He also has a nice confident stroke from 15 feet and in, and his ability to get out and hedge screens will be valuable in college considering how many schools rely on the ball screen offense now.

Plenty of raw material there for the staff to work with. It's up to Daniel how hard he is willing to work to fulfill his talent.
