Being optimistic here but, this year's short roster could be a blessing in disguise (very good disguise). In no other situation would our freshmen have gotten the minutes they are getting now.

So next year, we will have 4 Sophomores (AJ, Mar, Calixte, Greene) who played legitimate minutes in their freshman year expediting their development physically and mentally.

Mar especially seems like he may have a special career here at Mason. Very smart player who will figure things out quickly. He wasn't recruited by all those P5 schools for his athletic ability, it was his understanding of the game.
AJ will have a better feel on how to use his athleticism in the right context.
Calixte is showing more signs of life every game and I actually thought we could have used him more last night. He was pretty effective in his limited minutes against the 6-10 Knight for W&M.
Greene is the one who could show the most improvement, he's an explosive scorer. Just needs more confident on his drives to the basket.

We'll have two seniors (Otis, Grayer) who are proven studs.
Boyd is struggling a bit this year but still producing and I'm confident he'll work things out even this year

The unknown:

Reuter - Looks like a smart, very skilled player, but who knows?

That leave us with Kier. I am not sure what happened to him from the first 2 or 3 games of this year until now. He seems lost, timid, and just overall bad. He's playing like a true freshman. He's providing almost nothing of value on the court lately. To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of his last year, but everyone here kept on praising him. I was ecstatic to be wrong about him after the beginning of the season.

I hope there is no drama off the court that is keeping him from focusing or annoying injury. I don't see him limping at all or grimacing in pain. If he wakes up, it would provide a huge relief to this team.

Mar is a very good player and should only get better next year when he is able to play/guard other 4's and not be a 5.

We have a quality PG for one more year and Grayer has shown that on most nights he's going to get his points.

Those are my positives.

Great thread, Chank! We should call this the "Love Thread" to counter the "Hate Thread." With that in mind:
  • I love our new game atmosphere with the video screen, lighting, etc.
  • I love that we have an athletic director and president that see sports as a front door entrance into the university.
  • I love that Dave is creating a positive culture with good kids, who are held accountable on and off the court.
  • I love the addition of a player like Gonar Marr and hope Dave continues to land players like him moving forward.

Its only December and theres still 20 games+ to go.

Mar, Wilson, Calixste all look like a solid class going forward have had positive contributions at moments.

Boyd and Kier have had moments where they also look like they could be contributing team members.

The arena experience is lightyears better than in years past. The practice facility is open to help the team improve. Brad and Angel are giving the staff the resources they need to get the best players.

The A10 is down this year, and there is still an opportunity for Mason to get some wins even if they aren't that great.

It should be noted that the last two games our bench is averaging 15 points/game.

Now that's probably our desperation to replace the great production Kier was giving early on this season. Kier's production took an abrupt downturn even after scoring a career high 18 points against Louisville in a relatively close game.

Below is his production in the first three games versus the last 6 games for Justin.

Were the first 3 games an anomaly? Is this who Kier really is?

Were the first 3 games an anomaly or is this who Kier really is?

Please move this negativity somewhere else. This thread is only for the positives! ;)

hmm sophomore slump

I think that Kier is probably somewhere in between. I don't think hes a star, but hes a guy who you usually should be able to count on. I suspect that he's going to get it turned around because he is too smart of a player to not have any contributions.

My positive is that I can't blame the players we have that much because most of them are playing pretty damn well. The lack of an inside presence and lack of depth are the story of this season because it make us so easy to game plan against us and the short bench make over-compensating for deficiencies for 40 minutes very hard. I think Paulsen has been hurt by some big guys that haven't panned out, but eventually that trend will change. We won't do anything in March, but I'm hoping we can get hot and win a stretch of games in Jan/Feb just to make it fun. Just good enough to be excited for next season! LOL
