Here are the KenPom stats through Sunday. A few things jump out...
The good: The team is...
- 13th in the nation in defensive rebounding efficiency. Opponents are getting only 21.5% of available offensive rebounds. Typical of DP-coached teams.
- 58th in FTA / FGA percentage.
- 68th is 2-pt FG defense.
- 71st in Effective FG % defense
- 94th in overall Defensive efficiency. The defense is yielding .989 points per possession.
The not-so-good. The team is...
- 311th in Turnover %, with turnovers on 21.7% of all possessions. Atypical of DP-coached teams.
- 315th in FT %, making only 62.1% of their FTs.
The team is also at the bottom of the defensive TO% and Steal%. These stats were expected given DP's defensive philosophy. His teams at Bucknell always ranked near the bottom of all D-1 teams in these two defensive stats.
DP likes his teams to rebound on the defensive end, and not turn the ball over on offense. Through seven games, the team is on track with the former but needs work on the latter. DP's teams at Bucknell were typically very good FT shooting teams, so I'm sure they are working on their FTs in practice. However, given ST's struggles at the FT line, I would expect this stat to lag throughout the season.
