Spike Lee's appearance at Mason makes The Washington Post

I know bits and pieces of the tweets are in multiple threads, but now that Wash Post got wind of it, might as well create a fresh thread.

As it happened, Lee was on George Mason’s campus for the Envision Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit, an event that brings socially engaged middle school, high school and college kids to Washington for events surrounding the inauguration. In addition to Lee, the scheduled speakers included Colin Powell, Martin O’Malley, Carly Fiorina, Abby Wambach, Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson.

So that’s why Lee was inside EagleBank Arena on Mason’s campus. Even before Paulsen’s talk, he had stopped by the basketball locker room, asking an assistant if he could go say hi to the players. The coach said sure, so while Paulsen worked on game plans in his office, Lee greeted the team. But a couple of players from the New York City area hadn’t yet arrived, so someone asked Lee if he could come back later.

Jenkins felt inspired by the brief Lee visit: 'When Spike came, we were all locked in. For us it was awesome. The message was simple but a meaningful one: When you're on a team, it can't be about me or I. It has to be about us, about we. I think that's exactly how we came out and played against Richmond.'

It wasn't just Lee's influence at work. During the bye week after a disappointing 63-56 loss to St. Louis, the team held what Paulsen called a 'back to basics, mini boot camp' along with installation of new offensive and defensive wrinkles.

'I felt comfortable going into the game that we'd play well,' Paulsen said. 'I didn't know what the result would be, but we had a great week of practice.'

The team embraced the process and played unselfishly. To slightly alter a Lee film title, They Did the Right Thing.

Jenkins will remember the locker room moment with Brooklyn buddy and fellow Knick fanatic Lee for a long time.

'It was the best kind of surprise you could ever have," he said. 'Whenever you have a random celebrity especially of Spike's caliber show up and just give you a meaningful pep talk before a road game against the No. 1 team in the conference, it always gives you an extra boost.'

'Spike is legendary. That was cool to dap Spike up and have that little moment. Awesome.'"

I don't think it's physically possible to have a more wrinkled shirt than that one with Adam Sandler. I mean, I could take a shirt and ball it up as tight as possible, wrap it with rubber bands, and keep it like that for a week, and it would still look better than that shirt.

I was thinking the same thing until it dawned on me that it still looks better than the checkered Fruit Stripe gum shirt our coach is wearing next to him.
