NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade announced Wednesday that veteran athletics administrator Tom O’Connor will serve the league as a consultant. The former longtime Athletic Director at A-10 member George Mason University, O’Connor was a NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Committee member and chair, and was recently honored by the NABC as a prestigious “Guardian of the Game” for his career contributions to men’s basketball.
O’Connor will assist in the implementation of new strategic initiatives with an emphasis on men’s basketball. The anticipated approval of the A-10’s new five-year strategic plan sets the stage for the league to continue its growth in basketball scheduling, multi-team event (MTE) ownership, championship attendance, national positioning for postseason participation in the sport of basketball and the all-important brand expansion and analysis.
“Tom is nationally recognized for his distinguished career and brings a wealth of experience in intercollegiate athletics, complementing the current A-10 staff expertise. He understands the mission and values of the A-10 as a premiere NCAA basketball-centric league. Thus, he knows the challenges inherent in competing at the highest level of Division I for a conference not sponsoring football,” stated McGlade. “Tapping into his experience of more than 30 years in this business is a great opportunity for the conference.”
The former Division I coach is well respected as both a basketball expert and administrator. O’Connor oversaw George Mason’s Final Four run at the end of the 2005-06 season and also spearheaded the Patriots’ membership transition to the Atlantic 10 in 2013. A seasoned executive on a national level, O'Connor served as chair of the Men’s Basketball Selection Committee in 2007-08, completing a five-year term. He held a seat on the Management Council and was a member of the Division I Strategic Planning Committee and the Selection Review Committee. He also served a term as a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee and served on NACDA Executive Committees. His distinguished career included being selected as the recipient of the 2010 Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award presented by NACDA.
“I’m pleased to be working closely with the A-10 to enhance a league that is already well known for its terrific coaches, outstanding student-athletes and annually earning multiple at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament and postseason play,” said O’Connor. “The new five-year strategic plan is a strong foundation to continue building the future of the Atlantic 10, with the long-term goal of continued advancement in men’s basketball, postseason success, and continued achievement in non-conference play.”
