I figured I start this thread so everything DP is doing that we see during the games can be discussed. It seems everyone has come to the same conclusions; rotations are whack, the wrong players are playing too many minutes etc.

My red flags with this staff are as follows. And previous seasons can be included.

1. Not knowing Newman wanted to leave. Leads me to think there is a disconnect with players in offseason.

2. Not knowing your prized transfer, the one you said was all conference, was outta shape. I mean we aren't asking you to be Duke, but jesus F christ, how does being outta shape go unnoticed? Again, another disconnect with players. To piss us off even more, he was named a starter upon arriving on campus and given starting role while it was obvious he was gassing out after a few possessions.

3. Our shooting sucks. It blows my gasket that keir and green get starter mins when they produce the least when playing together. Both drive (rarely finish bc they are too thin/weak), but neither are a threat from the outside. Easy peasy for the defense, just pack it in, threat eliminated. I hate them playing together. JDS should get more time bc he can shoot. If he isnt getting pt bc of his defense that a crock of shit. Who's defense is good?

4. Rotations are whack. Starters with backups should be:

PG Otis/Hartwell
SG Kier/Greene/JDS
SF Grayer/Boyd/Mar
PF AJ/Reuter/ Mar if match up is there
C Reuter/Calixte

I have no f**king idea why everyone sees this except captain paulsen.

5. Defense. You played a pack line last 3 years and it worked well. All a sudden you think man to man is gonna work? Why? What defensive stallaions did you recruit? Clearly, we dont have the talent level and length to do this. Again, the numbers show the ineptitude so why not go back to a defense that works? Stubborn or did you listen to By George telling you to play a pressure defense? If it's the latter then listen to this post.

I'm sure there is more. I appreciate the analysis from posters that know what to look at. So dj3, and masonlawyer are banned from this thread. lauf Oht lauod.

Guess who leads the team in rebounding rate, block rate, and defensive rating, is second in steal rate and third in TS%, but plays less than 16 minutes per game?

It's AJ Wilson. I don't give a shit if he misses assignments. Play your playmakers, Dave.

Edit: Came across a little snippier than I wanted to. Blog probably coming tomorrow, but here's what I think lies squarely with the staff:

- Way too cautious to change rotations/lineups. I don't get why Mar got so much rope, Calixte could hardly get off the bench, and AJ still doesn't get starter's minutes. Extend this to JDS, who might be able to give us a shooting injection, but we'll never find out.

- They didn't recognize that Reuter protecting the paint for a bunch of guards who can't stop anyone off the bounce would be a defensive train wreck. Speaks very poorly to the staff's ability to self-evaluate.

- Total lack of creativity and ideas on offense. Same nonsense over and over and over again.

- Does this team have a shooting coach? Around 25.5% from deep on the year if you remove the Georgia Southern game, which is looking more and more like a massive outlier. Shooting has been god-awful in all four years.

- Turnovers and other subtle signs of being poorly coached/not in sync.

We're a few bounces away from being 4-3 instead of 2-5, but either way we're not playing good basketball. This is year four, with all Dave's players, and it's the second year of the two-year season. If some shooting from our guards doesn't magically appear this season we'll be one of the worst offensive teams in basketball next year.

Still makes no sense to me why you don't start Wilson at the 4. Why insist on starting 4 wings? Speaking of, why insist on playing 4 out when you don't have the shooters? Pound it inside -- and this would include having Grayer or Kier posting up their defenders when you've got Mar on the wing, like L used to do with Long or Campbell or Vaughan. Why aren't we playing more high-low with Mar and Wilson on the floor with Reuter? All three of those guys can hit a shot from the high post or finish at the rim. And what's with the poor spacing on the floor on the offensive side of the ball and the lack off-ball movement? Why don't the players know where each other are going to be? Why don't they know each other's weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball and anticipate where the help defense needs to be before the player gets there so they can be in position to: take a charge, alter/block the shot, force them to pass it back out, or force them to back out? These are all things that should be second nature to a team that's been playing together as long as this one has.

Has anyone been able to pick out a set play we run on offense besides our little back door cut when opposing teams are overplaying one of our guys? We run the same old tired endbounds play that just ends up being a lob towards half court every single time, and coming out of timeouts or key possessions I haven’t seen this team ever run anything resembling a set play.

6. Where is the Dick Patrick, Around the Rim, exclusive? If this isnt newsworthy for him, he might as well resign.

Issues I see:
  • Not changing your system to fit your players abilities
  • EGOS are way too big on this team. Players worry about stats and not winning
  • Not sharing the ball because you afraid your teammate will score more than you
  • Allowing your guards to turn the ball over and over without consequences
  • Two sets of disciplinary rules - favorites players, oops I meant key players, can turn the ball over and over and not be punished for it. None key players make 1 or 2 mistakes they get bench
  • This team should excel at transition ball, but Paulsen only allows 3-4 players to push the ball up the court
  • Paulsen doesn't allow his players to crash the offensive board. They should crash the board every possession. When the players go against protocol, good things happen

Who's dad are you again?

Egos appear to be the least of this team's issues. In fact, I would say that overall, this team lacks the confidence they need to compete at the next level.

He’s with Ian Boyd.

I can’t comment on many of his concerns, but I too have wondered about the egos and worrying about stats rather than wins/losses. I can’t say I’m a fan of checking social media after games and seeing our players posting highlight videos of them from the game after we just took a L. Drives me nuts.

Yep, everyone on this team looks scared to score, quite the opposite observation from that other poster.

I have no kids. I know talent when I see talent. I see when other players ice other players. Just watch next game you will see it to. My favorite players are AJ, Ian, and Goanar. I also like the kid who doesn't get any run, Jack. Have you not watch Jack in the layup line. He can shoot his a** off. We need shooting. He will not turn the ball over no more so than our other guards.

Are you sure they aren't just reposting something the team posted originally?

It's video screen caps or sometimes reposts... maybe I'm too old, but I would just rather have my guys pissed off after losing to teams like American instead of worrying about posting a video of their 3 or their dunk. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably on page 6 or 7 of things we should worry about.

It reminds me of Kevin Foster scoring 15 in a loss to Georgia Tech and he's smiling and calling people after the game celebrating his 15 when everyone else was pissed.

I think Mason social media guy posts updates during the games. Some with video highlights. Then players re send it if they want. I would think since players get a tutorial on social media, regular media, a tone should be set about boasting your highlights after a loss. Like none.

It would be interesting to hear what guys like John Vaughn, Erik Herring, Folarin Campbell, Will Thomas, Jai Jewis think of this generation of players in terms of how current guys react to a loss vs how they did.

Like you said, its not at the top of the list but if you can't perform under pressure, are losing to American at home, and the first word out of your mouth is Me or I, then that player probably shoudn't be here.
