Game Thread: Mason (6-1) vs. Nebraska (3-2), Tuesday, Nov. 26th, 7:30 PM (Cayman Islands)

ABOUT GEORGE MASON (6-1): AJ Wilson (13.1 points, 8.4 rebounds) did a bit of everything in Monday's victory, following up Friday's 19-point, six-rebound, three-block effort against No. 8 Maryland with 18 points, nine boards, three blocks and a steal. Javon Greene (13.6, 7.3) nailed at least three 3-pointers for the fourth time in 2019-20 en route to a season-high 19 points while adding seven boards and two steals; the 6-2 junior guard has reached double figures in scoring in every game and pulled down at least seven rebounds in four straight. Sophomore guard Jordan Miller (12.9, 5.0) made up for a second straight poor offensive performance with a season-high nine rebounds as the Patriots enjoyed a 40-26 edge on the glass versus the Monarchs.

ABOUT NEBRASKA (3-2): Haanif Cheatham (9.2 points) totaled five points on 1-of-6 shooting despite playing 61 minutes in his first two games but has turned it around during the winning streak, shooting 69.2 percent from the field while averaging 13.6 points after scoring a season-high 19 points Monday. Cam Mack (14.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.8 steals) committed a career-high five turnovers in 37 minutes against the Cougars, but he also continued to have a hand in just about everything Nebraska did, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Jervay Green (13.4 points) contributed 16 points and eight boards Monday and is 6-of-9 from 3-point range over his last two games after beginning the season 3-for-16.

Should be a big game for Oduro with Calixte probably out. He's gotta stay out of foul trouble and be ready to play more minutes.

Good news is Nebraska isn't huge and has just one starter over 6'5" in Ouedraogo, but they do have two guys off the bench that are 6'8". We might be able to get away with playing without Calixte/Oduro on the floor a bit more than I would expect against a power 5 team.

Big game.

GIVING DAY 2023
Go 1-0 today fellas. Lets get it done.

Mason is probably one of the better teams that Nebraska has played to date (believe it or not). They might not be that good, but they are still a power 5 school in the Big Ten.

AJ needs to continue to step up on the glass and his ability to score, defense also needs to continue to keep locking down.

Sounds like we'll be able to get away with a Miller, Mar, AJ frontcourt for stretches today? Let's hope Mar has one of his better games and scores some points.

Kier is probably going to get around 8 minutes today (per Paulsen presser). Should be interesting to see how he does with a little more court time.

Any confirmation on that, or just assumption based on the bad look last night?

Would assume the same. Even if he is capable of pushing it, this one isn't as important as conference play. Would be a nice win the team could feel good about beating a Big 10 program but not worth it if impacts Calixte's performance later.

Love this. I bet the medical staff is monitoring it like a hawk too.

GIVING DAY 2023
Need Javon to keep shooting well to win tonight, he's had some big threes in the last few games. Don't see this being a really high scoring affair, 64-60 Mason. AJ with 6 blocks tonight.

Kenpom has us as 1 pt underdogs.

Given the other kenpom stats, we would seem to have a significant advantage on the offensive boards. We're 47th in the country in OR%, while Nebraska is 340th in defending against OR%. Nor is Nebraska efficient in getting their own ORs (331st nationally). Maybe AJ and Jordan will have good games converting these opportunities.

Also Nebraska is not a good FT shooting team (54.9%, 346th nationally)...we shoot 69.3% from the line, which is just about at the Div I average (69.4%).

Both teams defend the 3 well (48th for Nebraska; 23rd for us) and neither team shoots 3s very well (33% for them; 31% for us). Nebraska does have a higher 2 fg% than us (52% to 47%), so we need to maximize our OR% advabtage

I know Hoiberg tanked in the NBA but he built a damn good program at Iowa State, maybe the second best in the Big 12 behind Kansas. Going to Nebraska, 10th or worse finish in the Big 10 in six of the last eight years feels like a pretty large step back. Historically awful, low fan support, no in-state recruiting, and you aren't even the best program in your own borders.

Thanks for the info! Watched the highlights--didn't realize that the gym was so tiny. AJ making off-balance jumpers---fortunate that the shots went in.

The Big 10?? Wait, we're talking about Nebrask....Oh, right. Had to do a triple take on that one.

There's no such thing as a "must win" for this team, but tonight feels like a game that could really swing momentum. We could theoretically start 10-1 before the TCU game and build some interest heading into the conference slate.
