vcu is currently 8 - 2 on the season and 1 - 0 in A10 play.
History: Including tournament play DP is just 3-8 against the Rams. We have only beaten them once at home (2/24/16) under DP.
Wins: Utah St., Memphis, Mount St. Mary’s, North Carolina A&T, ODU, Western Carolina, JMU, St. Joe’s, Davidson
Losses: West Virginia, Penn St.
Schedule: https://vcuathletics.com/sports/mbball/schedule
Roster: https://vcuathletics.com/sports/mbball/roster
Stats: https://s3.amazonaws.com/vcuathletics.com/documents/2020/12/22/vcu_cume_2021.pdf
vcu is led by 6’3” “Bones” Hyland (18.2 ppg & 2.8 reb), 6’6” Vince Williams (10.6 ppg & 5.2 reb), and 6’4” KeShawn Curry (9.4 ppg & 3.8 reb). 6’0” Freshman “Ace” Baldwin will be a player to watch for the next 4 years. The dynamic freshman has 51 assists to only 14 turnovers thus far. vcu is very deep with 11 guys averaging 10 or more minutes per game. 9 guys average 5 or more ppg. Their identity is clearly set and defined, wish that was the case for us. Although picked 9th in preseason A10 polls they seem to have gelled earlier than many “experts” thought.
vcu averages 77.4 points per game while giving up 64.7. The Rams shoot 48.0% from the floor and 34.2% from 3. Opponents are shooting just 39.7% from the field and 28.6% from 3. They shoot 76.5% from the free throw line. The Rams are currently out rebounded their opponents by .5 boards per game. They have already turned opponents over 165 times while averaging 9 steals per contest.
The game is on MASN and ESPN+.
My prediction: Captain Obvious reports nothing new. Be prepared to handle pressure for 40 minutes. At some point during the game vcu will go on a 10 minute spurt where we pee down our legs, turn the ball, and force bad shots because the clock is winding down. If the 10 minute run comes early in the game this will be a blowout vcu 85 - GMU 60. If the 10 minute run comes in the 2nd half it will look only a little bit better with the final score vcu 75 - GMU 60. Any way you slice it I see us falling to 1 - 2 in league play.
Dawn Hicks is seen crying court side after fans start a “We Love GMU and Dave Paulsen” chant in her honor.
